INITIAL THOUGHTS

The cover is SO CUTE! I just love it. Chick lit used to be my go-to genre, and to be honest, it still is. That is the one genre that always puts a smile on my face. So naturally, I immediately wanted to read this one.

WHAT I LIKED

The beginning. The first 10-15% of the book was pretty good. It was funny. It was cute. I actually really liked it. It got me excited for the rest of the book.

WHAT DIDN’T WORK FOR ME

Rebecca. I don’t think I have ever hated a main character as much as I hate Rebecca. She’s obnoxious, she is jealous (and not in a cute way), and she is so completely self-centered. She doesn’t appreciate any of her friends or family. She has ZERO compassion for anyone except herself. She thinks the world should revolve around her, and she questions anyone who has the audacity to have their own lives. I just don’t get it! Did the author think this was cute? Funny? Relatable? Because it wasn’t. At all.

The plot development. Omg this was bad. I’m so sorry. I don’t like saying that. But it was. Yes, I liked the beginning, but the next 80% of the book just dragged on and on AND ON. It wouldn’t stop. It felt like torture. I forced myself to finish. I kept asking WHY??? throughout the whole book. Rebecca plans a wedding, Barry gets overwhelmed, Barry leaves, Rebecca doesn’t take it well. And it takes about 240 pages to explain this. By the way, all of this is in the book blurb anyway! 🙄

OVERALL THOUGHTS

No. Just no. I can’t believe how disappointed I am in this book. I gave it an extra heart/star in my rating because I did like the beginning and because I don’t think the author is a bad writer. I feel like if she had likable characters to work with, she could tell a decent story. But these characters were just bad. I hated them. There wasn’t one character I liked. And I’m so upset that such a cute cover was wasted on a story like this. Why???

A lighthearted book about the perfectly planned wedding. with just the tiniest hitch that the groom has failed to propose. Rebecca has planned her fairytale wedding since she was a little girl - what could possibly go wrong. An easy, amusing read.
A debut novel for this author and I will look out for more by this author.
