This was on the slower side at first and it took me a little while to get into the story and figure out who was who. But then this is something I often experience with fantasy.

The world-building was really interesting to me and felt quite original. We’re dropped into a world of magicians and earthlings, where every magician is tied to a Shadow that grants them power. The plot follows a group on the search for a missing magician. Along the way they rescue a special girl who can wield magic without the help of a Shadow.

What makes the book especially fun is that it’s told from the perspective of a Shadow. One who’s sarcastic, cocky, and pretty hilarious. That unique POV added a fresh twist and definition drew me in.

Overall this was a fun read with a creative concept. I only wish it had drawn me in quicker.

So therefore:

I received a free ARC of this book. All all thoughts are my own.

This book is mixed for me. The initial scenes jump through time twice before settling chronologically, and a lot of information is given at once.

But as it settles, the world building of the story is incredible. It's a world full of intrigue, with lots to discover. The magic system is unique to me, with magicians deriving their power from 'Shadows', magicians that have died and are assigned to living ones in a ceremony. Each colour represents a different kind of magic, the story focusing on black and purple magic.

The story follows a mystery, with the characters trying to put together what happened to a missing magician. Along the way, they rescue a girl who is able to use magic without the help of a shadow.

Even though I struggled to warm to the main POV character - a shadow - the plot kept me interested. I also loved the rest of the cast, though I felt the book's treatment of Helena was off-putting. I imagine that younger readers that the book is targeted towards will get along better with the main character, though.

The Dead Shadow by Celine Domenech and Paul Newman is a thrilling, witty, and delightfully chaotic fantasy adventure that you won’t want to miss. With magical disasters wreaking havoc across the globe and a suspicious cover-up by those in power, this story pulls you into a high-stakes mystery fueled by revenge, sharp banter, and unexpected alliances. The quirky, mismatched crew—a determined Earthling teen, a mysterious clairvoyant, and a hilariously boastful Shadow—bring heart and humor to a plot packed with twists. If you love magic, rebellion, and a good dose of sarcasm, this book should be your next read.
