Metamorphoses Reimagined by Michael Marder was my first read through of Ovid's Metamorphoses, and although some of its philosophical layers stretched beyond me, I still found it to be a fascinating and rewarding read.
What impressed me most is how Marder treats the text as a "transmutation" rather than just a translation, reshaping Ovid's epic into letters, confessions, dialogues, meditations, and poetic fragments. This experimental style gave me a fresh and unexpected way into these timeless myths.
I especially appreciated how contemporary themes, like climate change, were woven into the retellings; reminding me that these stories of transformation and blurred boundaries between humans, gods, and nature are still deeply relevant today. Even when I didn't fully grasp every nuance, I felt the ambition and creativity of the work, and I know it's a book I'll return to again. For anyone interested in mythology, philosophy, or inventive reimaginings of classics, this is a captivating and thought-provoking read.
Many thanks to Columbia University Press, Michael Marder, and NetGalley for this ARC to review. All opinions expressed are my own.
