I liked the story, but I felt this was going to be a thriller.
The blurb made me think Alex and Rochelle were going to solve a mystery in Alex's corporation, and that they would find something else during their time together. So imagine my surprise when, instead of a mystery/thriller, I find myself reading a contemporary romance.
As I said, the book is good, but because of the previous confusion, I could only rate it 3 stars.

A story with a good diverse set of characters. Had more potential.

Alex Margolis hears of his parents passing from his distraught sister Judy. He works in LA, while Judy stays in San Francisco (20 miles north of their parents’ home). Alex tries to pick up the pieces but it feels like the pain will not end soon. Alex was married to Sofia, an immigrant from Belarus. After a year she announces that she does not love him anymore; and it becomes clear to Alex that she had married him just to obtain permanent residency in the US. He meets and gets to know Rochelle, who has a boy and a father needing care. Alex is wary of entering into a new relationship in a hurry. He also gets threats as a result of the work he is doing.

The story has a lot of elements – gangs, corruption, trafficking, fraud, other than relationships. The story had potential but would have benefited from better writing and character development. The characters are too black & white and there are too many things thrown into the plot every now and then. I did like Alex and Rochelle’s character and reading how their relationship progresses.

My rating: 2.5 / 5.

Not really a review because I didn't finish, mainly because I couldn't connect with the male protagonist and the writing style.

The story starts on a shocking note. And then the male protagonist goes on and on about his failed marriage in a too-much-telling fashion. Even after the reality is revealed (not that there was any suspense, it was pretty clear from the very first sentence). That too when he is supposed to be reeling with the greatest shock of his life.

Just realized that the book has already been published, or else I would have suggested a round of beta reading.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read this book. Sorry it didn't work for me.

this was a book with a plot that was just as vivid and detailed as the characters. it felt deep and rich and all the things you need to believe in a book. you get immersed into our characters world. you almost see it, feel it, and feel what they are going through. i like how it fit so well. you can believe this all happened to them and how they came together, but also what they needed to go through in their own hearts and minds to be good for themselves and each other. it was a clever plot. and i just wanted to know what happened next and wanted to know how our characters would end up.
