Stave Silk goes on a journey cycling from London to Fishguard, he takes a leisurely pace, which means he gets to appreciate his surroundings far more. He’s definitely a history buff and the book is littered with the history of the places along his route. For me, there was too much history, at the start it was interesting, but got a bit much for me after a while. That being said, it was interesting to discover towns, villages and places I’d never heard of before. I also have to admit the thought of doing something similar is quite appealing!

If you like cycling, Britishness and history this book is definitely for you!

An enjoyable description of a leisurely bike journey from central London to the Pembrokeshire coast. Steve Silk is an accomplished narrator of his odyssey and is a bit of a history nerd, showing curiosity about the churches, landmarks and other regional characteristics of the different landscapes that he comes across. I liked the way he cross referenced the modern route he was taking with the route followed by his Edwardian counterpart a century earlier. Being of a similar age, and familiar with both Norfolk and South Wales, his cultural references resonated with me, though they might be less interesting to readers from other generations.

Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book.

I did enjoy big parts of this book especially the narrative however found some of the history on the journey wasn’t of interest to me
I wasn’t too keen on the quotes from other authors etc
I did enjoy the authors easy writing style and obvious love of cycling and the journey he was on ,also the references to the 80’s especially the Adam Ant one which was so true for anyone of similar age
