This is John Grisham at his very best. When Simon, a small town lawyer is approached by a widow to rewrite her will, he is astonished to find that she has an extensive share portfolio worth millions.

Another lawyer across town has recently drafted a will but Mrs Burnett doesn't trust him and Simon is quick to point out that the lawyer in question has written the legalese to give him full control of the disposal of her assets with himself being the main beneficiary.

Simon redrafts the will, being generous to himself in the process. Along the way, he becomes quite fond of Mrs Burnett and regularly dines out with her, always being the one who picks up the bill.

When Mrs Burnett is involved in a car accident but then declines unexpectedly in hospital, events be one very complicated and Simon finds himself in his worst nightmare.

The book is a slow starter but this is necessary to set the scene and the courtroom drama is gripping.

Before the story has even started this book mentions that since The Firm the author managed to publish a bestselling book every year. Which made me wonder if I needed to know that before reading this particular book...

On the whole, this one wasn't for me and it makes me need to vent. Apart from a lot of the men being rather full of themselves, it was abhorrent to read that Tilly (actually called Mathilde when spoken to) was repeatedly referred to by her figure, another woman was allegedly lying through her yellow natural teeth, and miss Cooper was called a cougar and her appearances described by how short her skirt or how high her heels were. Really? I mean, really? Is this a book that will be published in this year, 2025? Really?

If all books by John Grisham are like this, thank you but no thank you, I'll refrain myself from going down that road again :(
