Brigands and Breadknives by Travis Baldree
I give this book 4.5 stars.
A drunken and desperate night sees Fern waking far from home in the company of a legendary warrior surviving on inertia, an imprisoned chaos-goblin and an absolutely thumping hangover.
As together they fend off a rogue’s gallery of ne’er do wells trying to claim the bounty the goblin represents, Fern may finally reconnect with the person she actually is when nothing seems inevitable . . .
This is the latest story set in Travis Baldree’s cozy and entertaining world and this time we’re following Fern, the foul mouthed rattkin bookseller. Fern’s having a crisis and starting to question what she really wants out of her life and after one or five drinks she ends up on an unexpected adventure with a legendary elf Asteryx, and a mischievous goblin called Zyll.
I loved all the trouble and mishaps they get into along the way and the growing bond between this unlikely trio adds so much fun and heart to the journey. And I have to mention the side characters, some talking cutlery and a clever horse named Bucket which I adored.
This one isn’t quite as cozy as the previous books, but in a way that made me love it even more. It’s still full of charm and humour, but it also digs deeper into questions of fate and doing what’s right even when it’s not easy.
A thoroughly enjoyable and heartfelt adventure that proves once again why the author for me is the master of cozy (and not so cozy) fantasy.
