This was a really strong read that caught me off guard. It opens with a hard-hitting emotional scene and builds from there into something layered, tense, and character-driven. The main character, Diana, is easy to root for. She’s sharp, determined, and not always likeable in the traditional sense, which made her feel more real to me. Her grief and anger feel earned, and her growth is one of the best parts of the book.

The world is rich with political tension and history. You get the sense that there’s a lot going on beneath the surface, and the story gives just enough to make you curious without overwhelming you. There’s a hint of mystery around the Book of Chaos and what it can actually do, which I liked, though I’m hoping we get more clarity on that in future books.

There isn’t much romance, which I didn’t mind. The focus stays on family, loyalty, loss and how Diana finds her place in a world that keeps trying to shut her out.

I do think it’s important to note that the book touches on some heavy topics, including violence, grief, and a scene involving sexual threat. It’s not graphic, but it may be difficult for some readers. The tone remains respectful and these moments are handled with care.

Overall, I really enjoyed this. It’s well-paced, emotionally grounded, and left me wanting more. Definitely a great start to what feels like a much bigger story.
