The first of the Karen Hart series for me, but it won't be my last. D. S. is able to bring Karen to life as she investigates the murders where the eyes are shewn shut. Each character in this story is following given a chance to investigate and we get to see it through their eyes. It follows the strict British protocols that make for good criminal procedurals. I'm looking forward to reading my next one.

This is the eleventh book in this series, but it would also work well as a standalone. D.S. Karen Hart is an intelligent and hard-working detective with a team that works well together. She’s a likable character with a sad backstory, but is determined to move past it. In this book, a brutal killing hits close to home, so Karen is told to step away from the case. Her team tries to quietly keep her in the loop, and she's not sure the detectives brought in to lead the case are up to the task. She can't help but do some investigating herself, especially since she and her fiancé could be in danger.
This was a complex and suspenseful case. I love Karen's team, so I missed them being able to openly work together. However, one team member, DS Arnie Hodgson, really steps up and plays an important role in the investigation, as does DC Sophie Jones who is eager, but sometimes doesn't know if she can trust her instincts. I was very surprised when the whole truth about the killing was revealed. As always with this series, as soon as I finish a book, I'm already looking forward to the next one.
I received an advance copy of this ebook from Amazon Publishing, Thomas and Mercer, and NetGalley for review consideration. My review is voluntary and unbiased.

D.S. Karen Hart is engaged and happy for the first time in a long time. When she and her fiancé, Mike, go to share the good news with his parents, they discover his mom murdered in the house. As the investigation begins, there seems to be a connection with a cold case murder of another woman. As the team digs for more information, Karen is officially sidelined by her boss for being too close to the case. However, Kare discovers an aunt that her fiancé never knew existed, but she is found murdered with similarities to Karen's mother-in-law. There seems to be a possible connection to a crime boss who might be Mike's father. It is a twisty plot with surprises that unfold with great finesse by the writer. I love this series and look forward to the next book.

Every instinct is screaming at her that something is wrong. ‘Lorraine?’ The door stands open, the kettle cold, the house dark and silent. Behind an overturned chair, she sees a figure on the floor. Rushing forward, a gasp of fear escapes Karen’s chest: her future mother-in-law will never open her eyes again…
Karen finds her fiancé's mother, Lorraine, murdered on a night meant for celebration. The worst part is that Karen's team forces her to step away from the investigation due to her personal connection. The mystery deepens when another relative is found dead with their eyes sewn shut in the same gruesome manner.
Despite being sidelined, Karen feels compelled to find the killer, and therein lies the issue I had with See No Evil. I can understand why Karen wanted to help solve the crime. BECAUSE she was close to the case, she would be able to see things that her team couldn't.
As Karen begins investigating from the outside, she uncovers haunting clues, including a torn page from Lorraine's address book. From there, See No Evil became a story about Karen and her team each trying to solve the case, but not sharing information with each other. As I neared the end of the book, I was so ready to get past that part.
As in previous books, I still loved Sophie. She had amazing common sense, unlike the new leader of the team. I wanted to kick him (and his master's degree) to the curb!!
See No Evil can be read as a stand-alone.
Many thanks to #ThomasAndMercer, for providing this book for review and consideration via #NetGalley. All opinions are my own. See No Evil has an expected publication date of September 2, 2025.

This book popped up on my ‘reader recommended’ list and sounded exciting so I thought I’d give it a whirl.
It started brilliantly and has good pace but it was lacking in police procedural and some of the dialogue was a bit clunky, repetitive and in some cases badly written.
As the story progressed I found myself less and less invested in the story. Tenuous links and hero antics taking precedence over fact and reality.
That said, it’s an unchallenging read and one I skipped through very quickly. But I don’t think I’d be eager to read another from this series.
Thanks to NetGalley for my advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

Another great read featuring DS Karen Hart. This time the case is personal and she finds herself sidelined from the investigation, well, officially anyway. The story mingles the current case with an unsolved murder from forty years ago. Great plotting keeps those pages turning.

Another fantastic Karen Hart book from DS Butler!
This case is more personal than ever for Karen, when Mike’s mother is killed before they announce their engagement. Lorraine is brutally murdered in her kitchen. Mike and Karen both cope in their own ways, with Karen wanting to jump in feet first to solve the case.
Butler writes the emotions and grief sensitivity as well as exploring the possibilities of who Mike’s father is.
Butler’s attention to detail and weaving of the story keeps you guessing if this is an organised crime hit or something bigger.
For me, the ending I didn’t see coming! Butler’s produced another fantastic crime thriller.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC.

Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for my copy of See No Evil by D S Butler
Detective Karen Hart is used to seeing dead bodies and solving crime but this time it's different. It's her future mother-in-law.
Karen is ordered to step down from the investigation but she can't, she has to have the answers for Mike her fiance.
A link is found to a murder decades ago, but who is the link.
A great read with lots of twists and red herrings.
Can be read as a standalone.

Already looking forward to the next one

Another story in the Karen saga…Karen and Mike…family and friends…a gruesome murder with the past coming back to haunt…two murders…are they connected? Will Karen solve the cases or be shut out because of who was killed? Will Karen and Mike marry? Who is Mike’s birth father? So many questions. Spend an afternoon solving this mystery. Intrigue…red herrings…realistic characters…the story moves quickly. I like this author and this series. Thanks Netgalley.

It’s an exciting time in DS Karen Hart’s life. She and Mike are working on announcing their engagement to their parents. All went well with Karen's family. They planned a dinner with Mike’s mother and his stepfather, James. Both were a tad concerned as Lorraine could be somewhat conservative in her expectations. Upon their arrival, approaching the door caused them both to breath heavily. How would she react? James would be kind but not so much Mike’s mum. Oddly though, Mike discovered the door to be unlocked and cracked open. Very unlike Lorraine they entered and called out for her, no answer perhaps she was upstairs. Walking into the dining room Karen found a shocking sight. Lorraine was on the floor in a pool of blood.
See No Evil will be published by Thomas & Mercer on September 02, 2025. I was able to read Butler’s latest novel via NetGalley. Once again it was an edgy read. Readers will not know what to expect from chapter to chapter. It was enjoyable but frightening. Do not miss DS Hart Book 11.

Another great addition to the DS Karen Hart series. This hits karen and her partner Mike personally but why? Two women are murdered in their homes, both with a connection to Mike., who is it.? Karen is taken off the case as a conflict of interest and a DI bought in from another station. But are they. Really all they claim to be??? Who is the killer and why these specific women? It was a page turner, hard to put down. Highly recommend

Another excellent read in the Detective Karen Hart series finds Karen and Mike ready to announce their engagement. This is book 11 in this very popular series but can easily be read as a stand alone. Karen is searching for a killer close to home in this solid and well written episode. It is character driven, fast paced with excellent plotting and plenty of suspense. I really enjoyed reading more about the personal lives of the main characters and the ending wrapped things up nicely. Some twists I never saw coming kept me intrigued throughout. I highly recommend the whole series for lovers of crime fiction. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.

See No Evil, by D.S. Butler is the eleventh book in the Detective Karen Hart series. In this story DS Karen Hart faces her own emotional grief when her future mother in law is chillingly murdered.
The night was to be a celebration with Karen and Mike announcing their engagement, but quickly became a nightmare when they discover Mike’s mother brutally murdered, her eyelids grotesquely sewn shut. Karen desperately wants to catch the killer but police protocol means she is excluded from investigations. Watching from the outside does not come easy for Karen, and she can not stop herself from following her own line of inquiry.
When another of Mike’s relatives is found dead in the same horrifying manner, it becomes obvious to Karen that this is no coincidence and the answers lie buried deep within Mike’s family. Karen’s own investigations not only ruffle the feathers of her colleagues but also put her own life in danger. But she feels that she must solve the case before another family member is murdered.
This is a well written addition to the series that I found impossible to put down. Lots of emotion and tension throughout.
I would like to thank both Netgalley and Amazon Publishing UK for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you Netgalley and Amazon Publishing UK for the eARC of "See No Evil" by D. S. Butler.
"See No Evil" was a fast-paced and great read. It definitely kept you questioning what was going to happen next and who the killer of the novel could be. I was completely blown away once the killer was identified. Not once was this even a thought, but that's what a great plot twist should be. Am I correct?

Another great installment in the Detective Karen Hart series.
Thrilling from the start and keeps you guessing right till the end.
Looking forward to the next one.

This one quickly becomes very personal for DS Karen Hart and her partner Mike, just as they are about to announce news of their engagement. Karen finds it a real struggle not being allowed to work the case especially when outsiders are brought in to investigate who don't work in the same way as Morgan does. She finds her own strands to pursue, aided sometimes by gangster Chapman. Alongside what has happened, Mike is still searching for answers about who his biological father is, especially when his main source of information is gone. The couple also struggle to support each other in a meaningful way as the case develops.
The book does tie up one major storyline which has been ongoing for the last couple of books, so it will be interesting to see the impact that has on future books in the series.

This is the 11th book in the series featuring DI Karen Hart and can be read as a stand alone. I have read most of the books with Karen Hart and I love her. She is a great character. In this book, Karen has just got engaged to her long time boyfriend, Mike and are on their way to dinner with his parents to break the news. On arrival, they find Mike's mum, Lorraine dead on the floor with her eyes sewn shut. Karen is not allowed to help with the investigation to her frustration, but knowing Karen she investigates in her own way. This is a brilliant crime novel and the characters are great. I thoroughly recommend this book.

See No Evil is a chilling, character-driven thriller that blends emotional stakes with a deeply unsettling mystery.
In this eleventh installment of the Detective Karen Hart series, D. S. Butler delivers a story that feels both intimate and harrowing. What should have been a night of celebration turns into a nightmare when Karen discovers her future mother-in-law murdered—her eyes sewn shut in a grotesque ritual that signals something far more personal than a random crime.
Butler’s writing is taut and evocative, balancing the procedural elements with Karen’s emotional turmoil. Forced to watch from the sidelines, Karen’s desperation to uncover the truth adds a raw vulnerability to the narrative. The clues—an address book torn, whispers of a troubled past—are layered with psychological tension, and the escalating danger keeps the pages turning.
What makes this novel stand out is its exploration of grief, loyalty, and the cost of obsession. Even as the killer’s pattern grows more terrifying, Butler never loses sight of Karen’s humanity. The suspense is relentless, but the emotional depth is what lingers.
A gripping standalone that will satisfy longtime fans and newcomers alike. Perfect for readers who crave thrillers with heart, horror, and a heroine who refuses to look away.

Another excellent novel by D.S. Butler that kept me enthralled to the final pages. Would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good thriller.
