An ancient artifact. A shattered family. Two sisters on the run across the stars—searching for truth, survival, and something worth fighting for.

Coming September 19, 2025. Starborn Alive: The Catalyst is the first book of the Starborn Alive series.

Overview

It all begins when their mother is assigned to investigate an artifact discovered on an asteroid. Nova has always been interested in archeology, linguistics, and more. So, she convinces her mother to take her along to help in determining the artifacts' origins and purpose. Unfortunately, shortly after the mission, Nova witnesses a horrific event and must flee for her life.

Her sister, Amalie, can help for a bit, but they eventually get split up. Nova continues to run, finding more answers, gaining allies, and losing them as well. Amalie remains in the viper pit, grasping at straws to survive.

Positives

I struggled not to reveal too much in the overview. I don’t want to ruin anything for you. Starborn Alive: The Catalyst remains fast-paced throughout and is filled with action. When I finished, I went, “Well, crap, now I have to wait for the next book!” I then proceeded to reread it to see what I had missed the first time. All the characters are well-developed, and the world-building is fantastic.

I appreciate how, even though it's just the first book, our main characters have already grown and matured from their experiences. They have suffered pain, loss, and betrayal. Nova has been able to make new allies, some of whom are powerful. Amalie is just trying to make a game plan, but has learned to cherish the little she has.

Negatives

There is only one complaint I have, and the author may have done it intentionally. As the "Secretary General" is a military/ government position, Sofia Clearwater would likely be referred to as “Sofia” only by friends and family; for all official conversations, she would likely be addressed as “Secretary General”. If it’s a military position, she could be addressed as “Clearwater” in informal settings. This is based on my experience in the US military. Like I said, the author may be exercising creative freedom, and I am being overly critical of it.

Recommendations

★★★★★

The author possesses a distinctive writing style that enhances the reading experience. It was delightful to read. I was surprised to find that this is the author's first book. Starborn Alive: The Catalyst is a five-star rating for me. Now I have to wait for the next book. This definitely gives “The Expanse” vibes.
