The lighthearted antics of MINECRAFT: THE MANGA continue in a third volume, and the core cast continues to build in an intriguing and creative way. So far, adventurer Nico White has teamed up with Grey (a rogue in zombie form) and Navy (an evolved Creeper who can explode without dying). Rounding out the party, at least so far, is one more permanent fixture: Platinum, an iron golem who looks like a human girl. Together, they continue their quest to the ends of the world as they know it.

As this volume continues, more of the lore of the sandbox game is introduced. Endermen and even Ender Dragons join the fray as Nico and his party learn exactly what they'll have to do and where they'll have to go to achieve their goals. Moreover, backstory from the first chapters finally starts to pay off, as it appears Nico's backstory will begin to play a larger role in later chapters.

As ever, MINECRAFT: THE MANGA remains accessible to young readers, with plenty of in-jokes and game lore to keep older fans entertained. The art still feels slightly off-kilter, but this isn't an issue of "bad art" so much as it is the obvious conflict of rounded children's manga with cuboid Minecraft imagery. The backgrounds do integrate what appears to be some cel-shaded game screenshots, which helps to smooth out that dichotomy a bit.

So far, it's a well-paced series that will entertain young fans. For some, it could even be their gateway into manga!

I’ll be honest—I didn’t fully understand everything in this volume, but I know so many children I’ve taught who would absolutely love it. The graphic novel format makes it especially appealing for reluctant or struggling readers, while the Minecraft theme instantly broadens its appeal to fans of the game.

This is exactly the kind of book that can tempt children away from scrolling on a screen and into turning the pages of a story. With its fast-paced action and engaging artwork, it’s a great gateway into reading for young gamers.

Recommended for ages 8+ (due to fight scenes).
