i definitely felt a little nostalgia slump reading this book for both and good and very not so good reasons. reading more young adult books lately has given me such an open eyed view on really how different your thinking as at that age. you often roll your eyes and think "nah im grown up", "dont treat me as if im young and dont KNOW" and then you become and adult, older or older and you realise you truly did think differently in those times. thats not a dig or jibe. you just do. and its both good and bad in various ways.
so when i read these books i can see how they can relate to us oldies but also are key to those younger days.
i felt this as i was reading this book. and now i want to make it clear that doesn't make it lesser than, immature or anything. it simply means there are key aspects to it where you think gosh poor young people, and know it will hit differently for them.
but besides all that i still loved it lol. it was written in that gentle way so the themes that hit both hit in an acceptable way but also with enough traction that it makes you stop and think. its emotional, gentle and tender writing so it draws you right into the story and the characters you are reading about.
a great book from Kelly, done really well with such capturing chapters it had me turning page after page.

I really enjoyed this as a opening chapter to the First Burning Bright series, it was an engaging storyline and was hooked from the first page and thought the elements worked well overall. I enjoyed getting into the world and how the characters were used in this storyline. I was invested in what was happening and left me wanting to read more in this world and from Kelly Bondurant.
