Anita is an author to watch. she delights and surprises me every time and this is no different. A soldier trying to hide out in the countryside whilst the Germans search for the enemy hidden in peoples homes. A stark reminder of what ordinary people went through. I cried at some of this. very moving

What a wonderful story. I enjoy reading stories set in the Second World War so this was a different era. The story is well written, with believable characters and describes the situation of France in the First World War very well indeed. Well worth a read.

When Henry's plane crashes in occupied France during the First World War he is found and hidden by Claudette and her grand-daughter Marie on their farm. There is no safe way of him getting back to safety in Holland so he remains on the farm but then 2 German Officers are billetted on the women.
A well written story of the bravery of civilians during wartime.
Well worth reading.

This story needs to be made into a film but a film worthy of its fabulous telling by this author! Could not put it down and loved every page even if some of them brought me to tears! Henry, a young English pilot, crashes into war torn France during the height of the First World War. A family of women take them into their home and hide him behind a panel in their living room which works well until they are ordered to house two German Officers, one a doctor and the other an unpleasant Prussian. The attractive young granddaughter causes problems as she becomes the focus of then men’s attention. The characters come alive in the telling as do the atrocities of this era. Brilliantly told and not to be missed!

I will start off with the only negative comment. I was waiting for some 'acts' when a British airman Henry crashes in his plane over Northern France during WW2. He ends up being sheltered by a local family on their small farm just outside a village. He did not look to find the French Resistance, help blow up trains, live rough in the woods or harass the Germans who were occupying the village. Perhaps I was expecting some brave, exciting foolhardy 'acts' relating to the title of the book?

On the plus side it is a beautifully constructed, warm tale of Henry and the families' hard life during those years of Occupation.

Henry is able to evade capture with the help of the women in the farmhouse, led by Marie and her grandmother even when two German officers are billeted in the farm house.

Inevitably. love is in the air and Ms Frank handles this and every other scenario beautifully.

Thanks to Net Galley and HQ for the chance to read and review.

Set in France during WW1 Marie lives in a small homestead with her grandmother and young sister when war breaks out.
Not your usual resistance story although they do hid a British airman for quite some time.. They also are forced to house two German officers when their village is taken.
I really loved this book.
Quite the ending.
