Thank you to NetGalley and author Kenneth Maitland for a copy of this ALC in exchange for my honest review.

Going into this story, I was definitely a bit skeptical because of all of the negative reviews, but I think the story is not that bad.

Joan of Domremy is about a young Joan of Arc beginning her journey to end the war between France and Britain in the name of God's will. She travels far and wide to get the attention of the Dauphin of France, so she may explain her goals of divine peace. With the novel only being about 3 hours in audiobook form, it is a short read.

Unfortunately, I did have qualms with this novel. While I do think the story has potential, I did not like how Joan was portrayed. It seemed like she was an ignorant, whiny girl compared to her male counterparts that she continuously encounters, especially since this novel is written by a man. I also felt no connection with Joan, making the novel feel a bit useless.

Overall, 2/5 stars.

I didn't love this but I also didn't hate it (Although I feel that's more because it didn't suit my reading mood at the moment than any fault with the book itself)

This is a story about the girl history knows as Joan of Arc but rather than reiterating the same story that's been told thousands of time before, this tale is centred on her "pre fame" and attempts to talk to the Dauphin.

The author has a nice writing style that seems to flow throughout and the narrator is entertaining and enjoyable to listen to but it wasn't enough to fully capture my attention.

Joan unfortunately lacks agency and depth of character. It also doesn't help that if you don't know a lot of detail of who Joan was, the political situation in France and who exactly the Dauphin is, then it's hard to understand why she felt her mission was so important.

A Joan of Arc that seemed to lack the agency that drove her to become a heroic French touchstone. Told through a series of somewhat odd and frustrating conversations, we see a Joan on the precipice of her calling, trying to work her way into the inner circle of the Dauphin. The premise seemed so very promising, but failed to capitalize on this promise.

This novella is structured almost entirely as a single conversation. While I did find the exchange intriguing, I couldn’t help but wish for more detail about the setting, the world, and the historical context behind the dialogue. Those layers could have added richness and helped bring the story to life. Because of the one-sided structure, the narrative felt a bit too narrow, and I found myself wanting more depth to fully connect with it.
On the positive side, the narrator delivered a strong performance that elevated the listening experience and kept me engaged despite the limited scope of the story. As a novella, I expected it to explore and experiment a little more, so the end result was somewhat disappointing. Still, the premise itself has real potential, and with more development this could have been a very compelling piece.
Thank you to NetGalley for the audio

This was a very short and entertaining audiobook! It is also very fast-paced! However, I felt that there should be characterization of Joan of Arc. This may be because it was short. I did like the narration. The narrator brought the voices to life. Overall, I recommend this listen for fans of Joan of Arc!

Thank you, Netgalley for an advanced copy of this audiobook for an honest review

I was excited to listen to the audiobook because I have always enjoyed the history of Joan of Arc, but unfortunately, the story I was presented with was not for me & felt it was a little repetitive in places & the story wasn't long enough for me to grip my teeth into.

This is a short audiobook of around 3 hours but the story doesn't have much to it.

Thank you to NetGalley and Victory Editing for an ALC. All opinions are my own.

I like the idea of this novella, but unfortunately it was a bit of a miss for me. Almost all of the dialogue was incredibly frustrating and while this definitely seems intentional, it didn’t make for an enjoyable reading experience. Additionally, for a book that is supposedly about an accomplished and strong woman, she never has any real agency and we spend most of the book focusing on the men around her. Joan felt kind of prissy and whiney though I’m not entirely sure if that was the result of the narration or the writing itself.

With that being said, I do think the narration sounded nice, and it was a pretty quick read.
