Another novel from Alexandra that is brimming with puzzles, riddles and, this time, festive trickery. Crossword setter extraordinaire Edie O’Sullivan, her son and Edie’s partner are visiting a remote Scottish island for Christmas. It’s the first time the hotel will play host to guests – a motley crew as you’d expect – and it’s not long before crackers are pulled, riddles are puzzled over and people being dying. Or being murdered, is the appropriate phrasing. For someone who adores conundra as Edie, it’s a chance to put the little grey cells to the test and solve not only the riddles but discover who is responsible. There are plenty of red herrings to throw a reader, and it remains a lot of fun throughout.
