Back to Haunt You is the second DI Jennifer Stone novel and it's quite emotionally powerful with family secrets and grief. It's a strong crime mystery that had me open mouthed at every turn. It opens with Vicky who has just lost her husband and her child is missing. The story then progresses at a alarming rate but it never felt rushed. I plodded along and was genuinely intrigued and suprised by every turn the plot took. I enjoyed the characters who have flaws which made them feel deeply human. The secrets made me feel vulnerable but the conclusion is what makes me feel it is worth it.

In the space of a morning, Vicky’s life changed. She started the day happily married, with a wonderful infant son and a doting husband. By lunchtime, her husband was dead and her child missing. DI Jennifer Stone knows time is critical. She and her team need to find nine-month-old Harry quickly – but the case has reopened old wounds for her, reigniting a pain that had only just started to heal. However, when people close to Vicky are hurt and her late husband’s estranged mother turns up, DI Stone suspects something may be going on behind the family’s closed doors. If she can’t figure out what, and soon, more people will die! Fantastic book and series! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one! It had high suspense, murder, mystery, intrigue, and a few shocking twists and turns! The storyline was very interesting! I highly recommend reading this book! Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!

Back to Haunt You is a gripping and emotionally resonant thriller that plunges deep into the complexities of family, grief, and the shadows we try to outrun. As the second installment in the DI Jennifer Stone series, it delivers both a compelling mystery and a richly layered protagonist whose personal pain adds depth to every decision she makes.

The story opens with a devastating twist: Vicky begins her day as a happily married mother, only to lose her husband and her infant son by lunchtime. DI Stone is tasked with finding nine-month-old Harry before it’s too late, but the case stirs up painful memories from her own past. As the investigation unfolds, secrets begin to surface—fractured relationships, hidden motives, and the chilling realization that danger may be lurking within the family itself.

Englefield’s writing is taut and evocative, balancing suspense with emotional nuance. The pacing is relentless, yet never rushed, and the twists are genuinely surprising. DI Stone is a standout character—resilient, intuitive, and haunted in a way that makes her deeply human.

For fans of psychological thrillers that explore the darker corners of domestic life, Back to Haunt You is a must-read. It’s a story that asks: how well do we really know the people closest to us? And what are we willing to uncover when the truth threatens everything?

With thanks to S Englefield, the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.

I quite enjoyed this read in the Jennifer Stone series. Book 2 started with a bang but the pace slowed down after the first few chapters. I quite liked the characterisation, especially Vicky and Laura and I hope there is more to come in this series. I liked the Isle of Wight setting and the plotting was very good, although I guessed the baddie towards the end. it was wrapped up very neatly and I think fans of cosy mysteries would enjoy the read as I did. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.

This. Book. Is. Amazing. I dropped everything and read it in one sitting. It’s addictive, suspenseful and twisty! Suddenly you think you’ve worked out what’s going on and nope goes twisty again!

I lost count of how many times I said “OMG!” and “WHAT!?”. It was everything a psychological thriller should be pure perfection! It kept me awake when I should have been asleep I couldn’t put it down and kept me hanging onto every single word... l just needed to know what happened!

A massive sparkling ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars!
