This was my first Inspector Gamache book, but it definitely won't be my last. Despite not knowing the background of characters and their relationships I was hooked right from the start.

Penny seems particularly skilled in crafting a story which deals with dark themes and builds suspense, yet is never unpleasant. She doesn't shy away from portraying real evil, yet there is always goodness, particularly in her main characters.

I also loved the setting - small town Quebec seemed both slightly exotic and completely familiar, and like Gamache I found myself drawn to Three Pines - I can't wait to return!
