I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, particularly as I was reading it in TEXAS exactly where it was set! I’d even been to Galveston, having returned from a cruise!
Simone,a restaurateur, is flying to Texas to meet up with her daughter, Lucy, who has been attending a Summer camp and practising her singing with a teacher in preparation for attending drama college in London on her return.
When Lucy disappears overnight from their holiday rental, Simone is beside herself. There is a burner phone left in Lucy’s bed and Simone receives messages from an unknown number. She is asked to do something terrible to get her daughter back- will she comply or go to the police as her husband suggests when she rings him in a panic.
As things escalate and Simone has to make some difficult decisions the tension ratchets up considerably..
This is an excellent thriller and also an interesting examination of relationships between parents and their children. It really looks at how far one is prepared to go to save one’s child- and as any parent would say, as far as one needs to! However does that stretch to breaking the law?
The ending was completely unexpected but perfect in many ways and I certainly didn’t see it coming.
I definitely recommend this as a 5 star read and look forward to reading more books by this author.!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for my advance copy.
