My goodness another book that i've started to help clear up my reading list and realised i had read this previously. That said I can't writie my feelings about a book I read a few years back so I did what I know I enjoy doing and I did a reread to refresh myself.
Just as good a read the second time around as it was the first time.
This is a book with a good storyline, one that keeps you thinking. A difficult case for psychologist Dr Jessie Flynn. Trying to unlock the traumas of a child. A book full of twists and very well written to get to the outcome.

It took me a while to get into, and I kept losing track of who was who, but was a lot more engaged with it throughout the second half. I thought the characters were well-written and interesting and I enjoyed the story. I'll be adding the others in the series to my TBR.

This book was based on an interesting premise, and mostly well written. The characters were interesting, and I did like it that most of the threads were tied up at the end. I would be happy to read more by this author.

Fire Damage by Kate Medina.

So good to find a new author of psychological thrillers. Really great characters throughout all that have their own story to share. Fire damage has pretty much everything you could want: murder, mystery, heartache, couldn't put it down! I would recommend to fellow thriller lovers who like a good twist and turn.

I love thrillers and this book didn’t disappoint, I couldn’t put it down. I’m looking forward to reading more books from Kate Medina in the future.

This is a great start to a series and I wish I had reached this on my shelf much sooner. It provides a 'different' approach to crime investigations with some brilliant and realistic characters. The plot is chilling and dark, covering contemporary themes, and highly emotional with a damaged child at the heart of it. I couldn't put the book down and raced through it. I will be buying the other two books in this series.

Unfortunately, I read this book back in 2017 but completely forgot to upload a review on here, so can't remember exactly what I was going to say about it!

I like it when the main characters in a story have lots of layers that only reveal themselves as you get to know them.
Kate Medina has created such a character with Jessie Flynn. My understanding is that this book is the first in a series and if so I look forward to spending many more hours in her company.

Really enjoyable read. Good characters and a Good story. Well worth a read. Think others will enjoy.

I've never been the person to really enjoy mysteries, but I did enjoy this one.
I love getting surprise reads that I end up loving a lot. This was most certainly one of them!

Dr Jessie Flynn is a psychologist working with a young boy with issues. His father is an injured soldier and his mother quite detached. Captain Ben Callan, military police has a case he needs Jessie’s help with but the two cases seem to be related.
I really enjoyed this book and will be reading more by this author for sure. Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.

Dr Jessie Flynn is a psychologist working in the Defence Psychology Services. She is part of the armed forces and has served in the UK and abroad supporting veterans. She is based in the south of England near Aldershot. Jessie is given the case of a traumatized child, who seems to struggling to adjust to his father’s horrific injuries. We meet 4 year old Sami, his father Major Nick Scott and mother Noorie. Major Scott has been badly burned, following an ambush in Afghanistan. He is still recovering. There is more to this than meets the eye. Sami refers to a mysterious Shadowman terrifying him. The whole family seems detached. Can Jessie work out what is going on?
Drawing on some of her own personal experiences to add a level of realism to this tale that many of its ilk are missing, Kate Medina has written a mystery / thriller with a multi-levelled plot that had this reader looking the wrong way, with characters who could easily be clichés but instead are compelling, real, people. Every act perpetrated in the tale has a feeling that it could have happened, rather than being manufactured by the author for shock value.

I have only now gotten around to reading this novel. A first in a new series from Kate Medina.
The book follows an army psychologist Jessie Flynn and her case is a young boy suffering serve trauma after his father suffers from major burns whilst serving in Afghanistan. A lot of the characters, including Jessie, have troubled pasts or issues from their past, which make for believable characters. We learn a lot about Jessie which make her an intriguing character. It is a well written, interesting and fast paced story full of twists that keep you guessing. Look forward to more in the series.

I really enjoyed this book and have already recommended it to several friends! I will be on the lookout for more from Kate Medina!

Really enjoyed this. Have since gone on to read the next two in the series. Jessie is one of my favourite book characters.

This is the first in the Dr Jessie Flynn series which at the time of this review has had two very well rated sequels. And it's easy to understand why people like these books. Jessie is a tortured soul, a bit of a rule breaker but essentially a good psychologist, despite her own issues and demons.
In this first novel she is asked to see Sami, a small boy who's father has come back from Afghanistan, horrifically burned. It seems likely he is traumatized by his father's injuries but the more she sees him the more Jessie is convinced there is more afoot. A series of violent attacks, both home and abroad seem to be pointing to a conspiracy of silence that Jessie will need all her training to break down.
There's a great cast of characters here. Jessie is a compelling protagonist but the supporting characters of Ben Challan and D.I. Bobby 'Marilyn' Simmons are also pivotal to the novels success as an great thriller. I'm looking forward to reading more from Kate Medina.

Fire Damage is a dark thriller with a psychological feel to it based around the army and the traumas that come as a result of this.

I began this book last April, got 20% in and lost my way. So I set it aside. A fresh novel and a new author for me, too good to abandon but not ready quite, to embrace the subject matter.
When I heard book 3 in this series was due out I thought it was time I caught up and not let Dr Flynn get away from me.
Jessie Flynn is a psychologist attached to the Army. She is well versed in her subject and although just 29 years of age has visited Afghanistan twice and treated many soldiers struggling with combat stress.
When a serving army Major, badly injured himself, refers his Son, Sami just four with deep traumatic symptoms akin to PTSD Jessie has a fresh challenge.
The boy is mentally scarred, hanging on to a torch he shines to stay safe, scared of The Shadowman and fearful of being burnt.
There are side plots involving the local police and a military investigation into colleagues of Major Scott that brings Jessie into contact with one of her former patients Captain Ben Callan.
Kate Medina, weaves all these threads together to make one engaging and tense thriller. Despite army and civilian detectives crossing her path it is through her determination to help and save Sami that the case unravels and the mystery becomes clear.
Not before a few shocking surprises leading to a wonderful climax leading back to perhaps where the nightmare began.
A stunning introductory book in this new series, with a credible story, army focused but balanced by a parallel civilian angle. Being young Jessie isn’t the overconfident brash lead but someone we see prone to errors and often feeling her way. She is also troubled by her own past and at times almost debilitating compulsion for order in her life due to her own OCD.
Beautifully balanced; the initial trouble I had with the grief and suffering of Sami is addressed although not always well as this is an imperfect world. However Flynn’s integrity and persistence not to drop the case carry the reader and leave one hopeful of a good outcome.
Many interesting characters are introduced in meaningful ways so that they appear fully formed and fleshed out. This in itself is a skill and it promises a strong future for this series which is unlike many other novels in this genre and that are series based.
It is clever that a respected psychologist can’t treat her own OCD and funny when the need to ask questions, taught in her training lands her in personal danger.
I liked Dr Jessie Flynn, I loved her dedication to Sami and her desire for the truth. Others too will warm to her character and like me delight in this story.
