It is always good to discover a new author & I'm hoping that this might also be the start of a series for Kate Medina as there seems to be a lot more mileage to be got from the fascinating Jessie Flynn.

An intriguing and complex story featuring an interesting main character. The pace picks up as it goes along, the puzzle is gradually unravelled and the multiple plot lines brought together in a satisfying way.

I do enjoy books that involve psychologists / psychiatrists. This was the first book in a new series and I look forward to reading the sequel.

This is the first book in the Jessie Flynn series, and after reading this, I definitely insist on a second book! Jessie has to counsel a young boy and the issue of PTSD is dealt with on a sensitive and informative manner. This book was well-written and really intriguing. The reader is hooked with the poor boy's issues, and I couldn't wait to see if Jessie could make a difference in the poor child's life. Recommended.

A year ago I wouldnt have got half way through this book but at 45 and finally having learnt the important life skill of patience I am glad I am a year late reviewing this fantastic book.

The story is full of messed up and traumatised people and probably the most in need of a psychologist is Jessie Flynn herself. Throughout the book we find out about her background and what has made her into the person she is.

Jessie is trying to help 4 year old Sami who appears to be suffering from PTSD after seeing his father, a burns victim in Afghanistan, for the first time after his injury. Jessie is also asked by a former patient and equally as messed up Captain Ben Callan to help with a case he is working on of a soldier dying in suspicious circumstances in Afghanistan. Add to this a washed up decomposed body that was killed by severe blunt trauma to the back of the head being investigated by Bobby "Marilyn" Simmons and we have an exciting slow burning thriller of a book that although seems a bit confusing and complicated really isnt.

The pay off at the end is worth it and really left me wanting to read the next book in the series.

DNF - I started this book and I really really gave it my all. But unfortunately, I couldn't finish it. I have no fault with the writing style or the story itself, I just couldn't get into it!

It's taken a while to read this book as I broke off and went back to it a couple of months later. At first I found it slow going, but after about a third of the way through, the story started to pick up pace, by the halfway point, I couldn't put it down. I would recommend this book. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read an ARC of this book.

Unfortunately I could not take to this book and found myself skipping page after page to try and finish it. I found the characters quite annoying and felt no empathy towards them, my interest wasnt held and by the midway point I couldnt remember which character was which. Unfortunately this one wasnt for me.

Oh I liked this book, it's centered around a 4 year old boy called Sami and his parents. Sami is been treated for PTSD by psychologist Jessie Flynn who starts to suspect the parents are holding back on what they know.

I don't want to spoil it for others so can't say too much about the book but a lot comes out in the book some dark things from not just Sami but the community and Jessie herself, she has reasons why she became the woman doing the career she chose.

It's a great book and runs deep in places but is needed. A good read for anyone enjoying a good thriller that's deeper than your average!

Army psychologist Jessie Flynn is asked to treat the traumatised four-year-old son of an army major. His father has been badly burned in a petrol bomb attack in Afghanistan and it seems that he is the terrifying ‘shadowman’ at the heart of Sami’s terror. But the situation is far more complex than that, and Jessie’s investigations lead her to make some intriguing discoveries about Nooria, the boy’s mother.
Jessie is also asked to help a former patient, Captain Ben Callan, with his investigation into the apparent murder of a soldier in Afghanistan. And does a body washed up on a Chichester beach have links with either case?
There were some parts of this book that I found really gripping and thoroughly enjoyed. Jessie is an interesting main character and is certainly three-dimensional. Her history has a huge effect on her everyday life and this adds an extra depth to her character, and her relationship with Callan is also well-written. I didn’t guess the twist at the end either. And Sami is a hugely effective character, and very sensitively written
However, the story took a while to get going and I did find myself skipping through some of it. And there were aspects of the writer’s style that I didn’t like. There were quite a few incomplete sentences. Sometimes these worked, adding drama and tension, but quite often they just seemed awkward and unfinished.
And the ending felt very rushed. Everything was tied up very quickly in almost one scene, which was a little disappointing, particularly as things took a while to get going in the beginning.

Fire damage

One of the best thrillers I have read in a long time.

The threads are all there but the reader's kept guessing how they will come together until pretty much the end. The twist is so unexpected that you have to admire the author's skills in creating a credible and complex life for the characters.

This was so well written that I kept reading and when I had to stop could not wait to start reading again.

The ending is left in such a way that I'm anticipating a sequel and I will be dissapointed if there isn't one!

I heartily recommend this to everyone.

I received a free copy from net galley.com for my fair and honest review.

An interesting psychological thriller, which initially seemed very disjointed as the connections between the three separate cases were not clear. However, perseverance paid off as the story reached its climax.

What a fabulous book. The plot builds up nice and slowly with all the side stories culminating in a great ending where everything is tied up.

The characters were well written and very believable. They each had enough imperfections and back story to feel that they could be people you know.

I'm now left with a book hangover and I'm missing Jessie already. This is the first book I have read by this author and I will certainly look out for more.

All in all, fantastic!

A complex storyline with an ending that suits the story. The lead female grows throughout the story and her flaws are believable and not overplayed. I'd be interested to see how the romance develops so will be staying with the series.
