I think in general, content like this doesn’t really resonate with me. The speech patterns can be a little hard for me to get around while also processing the message behind it.
However, I can see how this would be really great for some people. If you’re interested in trying translated poetry, I’d definitely give this one a shot.

Goethe is a German poet I have heard in passing but never actually read in English. This translation, by John Kent, is a wonderful introduction to Goethe's verse.

Part of the allure of poetry is falling in infatuation with the language of the narrator. While I am by no means fluent in German, it is interesting to read Goethe's poetry in English. English is of course a Germanic language, and the words presented here sound natural in this translation.

Reading some of the original German poems in the introduction to this collection, I find it curious that as a native English reader, I connect with these translations while losing the original rhymes and cadence's of Goethe's original German writing. Poetry can escape the pratfalls of being doomed to formal structures and rhyming structures, and well written sentences tend to have an intuitive cadence on their own.

Goethe's words flow well in English, obviously, and his essence is retained in these translations. Kent has the benefit of working with a gifted writer, and does not intrude or impede the original poems in any way I can perceive. This collection is exhaustive and presented elegantly. The publisher utilizes an intriguing cover design that draws one's eyes, especially a poet's, to the book's content.

Overall, I would recommend this to anyone interested in picking up on a foreign poet who seems to have quite a bit to reflect on in his own passions and thoughts...
