I really enjoyed this, it was a heartwarming and magical story.
I hoped to read this to my daughter but the book was lengthier than I thought it would be (recommended 7y+). I do like the illustrations, and they really give me Coco vibes.
I loved how the book introduces these fantastical creatures and the idea of a "dreamworld" that needs to be protected. It's a great adventure story that shows how even the smallest hero can be brave and make a difference.

As a Spanish teacher for several decades, I hoped for a book that would be lighthearted and informative, as well as skillfully illustrated. Several recent movies have called attention to alebrijes through Día de Los Muertos.
This is not that book. If it's intended for EJ readers, it's too long and complicated. Little ones are not going to stick with a story that has all those twists and turns.
And what is with Diego breakdancing? What does that have to do with anything in the book or the history of alebrijes?
There are many Hispanic illustrators who could have produced enchanting art. Instead, AI was used.
I buy lots of books on Hispanic culture for my classroom but this won't be one.
