The house was meant to be a fresh start.
A dark psychological thriller.
Lucy and Matt Dawson two children and a devil dog move into their forever home, 13 Rutland Terrace, bursting with secrets, this grand Georgian four storey house is full of charm and character.
Hoping to make her marriage stronger Lucy finds a journal belonging to Rachel Bello, with startling stories and the content is scandalous.
Your in for one startling read with this book,
I couldn't put it down with a very big twisted ending, this book tells two stories now and then about Rachel and Lucy and how they were more similar than they think, it might now be too late, and before us is not a book to be put aside.
Brilliant read.

Then - Rachel and Adie are in an unhappy marriage. She is an heiress to a family in the beauty industry. He is of Nigerian descent and from a humble family. They both plan their move to Rutland Terrace.
Now - Lucy and her husband Matt have just moved to Rutland Terrace. Lucy has an overactive imagination and her husband Matt may or may not be gaslighting her. Strange things happen in this house. Is she imagining it all?
This book sucked me in from the very first chapter but it went downhill. There are more than a few plotholes, and the story seems too convoluted and far-fetched, which is a lot to say about a book in this genre.
Perhaps it's a "me" thing. I prefer to read books with strong female characters, and both Rachel and Lucy were anything but. It's difficult to discuss this without spoiling things, but it's probably generational and perhaps even class based. The characters refer to themselves as middle-class (lol), and there are cultural references to the mid-2000s, including archaic self-body image issues. Readers who are in the target market this book is intended for will probably disagree with me.
Did I love the ending? absolutely not. See above, re: generational and class diferences.
All in all, it's an easy read. Definitely not a book to think too deeply about, just enjoy it for what it is.

🏠 BEFORE US by Jane E. James
Packed full of breathtaking twists, this BRAND-NEW psychological suspense is utterly addictive!
The house was meant to be a fresh start… but from the moment we arrived at 13 Rutland Terrace, something felt wrong. My daughter refuses to go near the cellar, the dog won’t stop barking, and then I found the photo — a family just like ours… only the woman in it looks terrified.
They lived here before us. Now I can’t stop thinking about her. Because this house is keeping secrets. And my husband… isn’t who he used to be.
If you love twist-filled, chilling psychological thrillers like those from Freida McFadden, B.A. Paris, K.L. Slater, Lisa Jewell, and Shalini Boland, this one’s for you! 🔪📖
