This is a well researched series of historical procedurals, with an ancien regime investigator who can move between the aristocratic world of the Versailles court and the stews of Paris' theater district, working to unravel the presumed suicide of a Count's heir. The case quickly unravels into tax farming, degenerate gambling, plots against the decrepit monarchy and governmental corruption. As befits it setting, the resolution is early modern reality, not a 21st century conception of what is fair or just.
