The aptly named Walking on Sunshine is a lovely tale of new beginnings, living with grief and finding your place in life. The setting is rural Suffolk, a place I don't know, but lyrical descriptions make it easy to visualise as the story unfolds. Tilly heads to her childhood holiday haunt to say a last goodbye to her father, whom she nursed through his final illness. Tilly is sad, but having cut ties with her old life, she looks forward to something new, yet undefined. It's a story about new friendships and discovering who you really are. Tilly's friendship with Constance is the story's mainstay, and it develops into something that enriches both their lives. The gentle yet conflicted romance with James is realistic and charming, but what really resonates is the changes Tilly makes in her life through Wiliowwell Woods. I like the characters, the community, the rural setting and the story's heartwarming qualities.
