This is a classic Michael Connelly- A real page turner , the second book about Detective Stilwell who runs the police force on Catalina Island.
In this book, Stil is caught up in a shooting incident at a stakeout where one of his officers is killed and one is injured and solving a cold case when a missing woman’s rucksack is found on the island.
The shooting has repercussions as Stilwell is taken off the case by his boss but fearing he could be blamed for any mistakes he continues to investigate.
When looking into the abandoned back pack he discovers it is connected to a cold case being investigated by Renee Ballard and her team on the mainland. Renee is one of Mr Connelly’s other series characters and it is fun to have the two work together on solving the case. When it looks like there is a serial killer involved, it is a race against time to find out who it is before there is another murder.
As ever I enjoyed the fast moving plot and the thoroughness of this police procedural. The setting of the island was also appealing as it is well described- tempting me to visit should I ever be in the vicinity.
This author can always be relied upon to create a book that the reader finds hard to put down.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for my advance copy.
