I’ve been a big fan of the Detective Kim Stone series right from the very beginning. Every time I pick up a new book I think it won’t be as good as the previous one- how can an author write 23 books that are all equally compelling making you stay up all night turning the pages? Well every time I think this I am proved wrong! Number 23 is every bit as good as the earlier ones, maybe even better!
Part of my enjoyment is catching up with all the characters, Kim, Bryant, Stacey and Penn and in this book they all have important roles to play.
When social worker Ashley is murdered on the way home from netball practice leaving a husband a young child, Kim and her team look at all the angles. Her husband seems perfectly normal but when he starts to act suspiciously trying to whisk his daughter off to Scotland, Kim wonders what he has to hide. Moreover Ashley is liked by most people who know her and no motive is immediately forthcoming.
Then another similar fatal stabbing occurs and Kim realises that a serial killer may be on the loose.
This is a complicated investigation with motives definitely thin on the ground and the team have to work doubly hard to work out what is happening.
As is normally the way in these books, Kim is also investigating a separate case where a woman has been arrested for shooting her neighbour, which should be a straightforward solve and convict but Kim is not 100% convinced! Particularly when Witches curses are involved!
I love the way the plot strands all come together in the final pages of Angels Marson’s novels- she is certainly a very gifted author,- working out how to tie up storylines is her superpower . She also portrays very believable characters, people that the reader would actually like to get to know in real life! As ever with this series, when I finished the book, I felt sad that I would have to wait a while before catching up with Kim and her team again.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for my advance copy.
