A dismembered body at a London train station on a detective’s very first day with the Mett.Talk about being thrown in at the deep end. The Quiet Kill by Robert Bryndza is the first book in a brand new crime thriller series and it grabbed my attention from the start. Set in late 1980s London, Jamie Day has barely arrived from Suffolk before he’s pulled into a dark, gritty investigation. What I loved most was how authentically the era was brought to life before computers and mobile phones, when paperwork, phone boxes and fax machines ruled the day. Bryndza doesn’t shy away from the social realities of the time either, exploring attitudes towards the gay community, HIV/AIDS with a sense of realism that added depth and atmosphere to the story. As someone who was a teenager in the 80s, I found those details immersive, and the whole book gave me strong Life on Mars vibes.
The plot is suspenseful, impactful and packed with tension, and I quickly became invested in Jamie, his colleague Tracy and their boss Harry. I’d recommend this to readers who enjoy police procedurals and mysteries that balance character development with a compelling investigation. Content warnings include violence, murder, dismemberment, homophobia and themes relating to AIDS.
I’m glad I picked this one up and I’m eager to see where this new series goes next.
