This is a quirky book and one that feels like it has taken me forever to read. I had moments where I wanted to give up but the back and forth was enough to keep me invested. There really is something special about books that can create a believable world, with a motley crew of characters and have a reader want to stay.

There was much to enjoy here, but I found I couldn't connect with it. I'd read more from this author in the future though.

A 19th century Night Vale? (Night Vale is a small town that is featured in an American audio programme - think Lake Wobegon with aliens.)
I really wanted to like this pseudo-historical fiction set in a frontier town, shortly after the American Civil War. The cover and description were enticing. However, I'm not really one for magic realism and could not really engage with the story line. Perhaps I was trying to read it too quickly (for a review) and should try it again at a slower pace.
