This is certainly a dark tale but it is a compelling read and although I found it harrowing I had to keep going- how would it all end? I really wanted to know. And let me tell you- the tension does not let up, even in the last few pages.
It is a story set in two timelines, the first takes place before and after 9/11 and the second in the modern day.
Molly’s mother disappeared when the Twin Towers went down, when she was a newborn baby. She has no memory of her but has been raised by her father and her stepmother Evie to whom she is very close.
Every year she goes to the memorial to feel a connection with the mother she never knew.
However when Molly becomes pregnant, a strange encounter makes her question everything she thought she knew and everything she has been told.
Everyone knows what they were doing on 9/11- it’s one of those dates like the assassination of Kennedy or the death of Elvis and Jodie Picoult has managed to weave an engaging but heart wrenching story about events on that day and how they are still affecting people in 2026.
As ever the author has done an incredible amount of research to write the novel and this manifests itself in part two when we read about Georgia’s difficulties.
There are several twists in the novel so I won’t go into too much detail as I don’t want to spoil it for future readers but it was one of those books that was both a gripping read and also a book which taught me something about a subject of which I knew little.
There was even a sub plot about mosaic making which I found fascinating since I’d had a go at it myself a few weeks ago!
I definitely recommend “Hollow Bones” as an enthralling and emotional read.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for my advance copy.
