This is the 3rd book in the Gabriel Dax espionage series and it’s a joy to read. A well written spy book is difficult to find but William Boyd has become an expert in the genre.
It’s 1964 when the book opens and Gabriel, travel writer and part time spy, is in the USA , tracking down an old agent who has some important information to impart. Once this mission is completed, he returns to London where his handler, the mysteriously attractive but enigmatic, Faith Green, asks him to go to the Soviet Union to extract their MI6 double agent, Kit Caldwell.
There are thrills galore as well as murder and mayhem, Gabriel does not know whom to trust in the secret world, leading to a climax where Gabriel is fearful he may have to kill or be killed.
This is a fast moving novel with plenty of suspense - I raced through it in a couple of days. I really like Gabriel, William Boyd is very skilled at character development- as Gabriel becomes more confident in the secret world, he becomes more suspicious. Can he really trust anyone but himself?
I definitely recommend “Cold Sunset” as an excellent espionage thriller but I would suggest reading the first two books as they set the scene and introduce the main characters.
