If you like twisty domestic thrillers this is definitely the book for you. Reece turns up at his parents’ house to find them both dead in bed- murder or murder-suicide?
Once the police are called matters become more and more strange with secrets from long ago seeming to have some sort of impact on the present situation. Keeping these secrets leads to some awful consequences particularly for Reece’s brother, Holden. Reece’s own wife and son are soon caught up in the situation and Reece starts to fear for all of them. The family will never be the same again after such an awful loss.
As the family come to terms with the tragedy and more facts are revealed, Reece realises he really didn’t know his parents at all.
The characters in this novel all had a lot to hide except Reece who seems completely credulous, knowing very little about what has been going on. The detective, McCabe, who investigates the suspected murder suicide cannot seem to get to the bottom of what went on as the crime scene has several anomalies. The beauty of this novel is that nothing is as it seems, right from page one and as I don’t want to spoil it. I’m loath to reveal too much more about the plot.
This is a typical Linwood Barclay book with so many twists and turns that the reader really does not know what to think. I certainly didn’t guess the outcome as everything I thought had happened was turned on its head by the last few pages!
I definitely recommend “Not a Word” as a five star read.
