This is my first Kristin Harmel novel. She has stepped away from historical fiction, and I was curious to read this new story. I loved how her own experiences of living in Paris brought the City of Light vividly to life. Despite the multiple POVs, the story never felt overwhelming thanks to the strongly crafted character development, and I found myself genuinely invested in every journey, which doesn’t always happen.
As my first audiobook review, I also wanted to mention how much I enjoyed Madeleine Maby’s narration. She captured the personalities of the characters beautifully, with a natural pacing and cadence that enhanced the storytelling and emotional moments. The different voices felt distinctive and convincing, both for male and female characters, making it easy to follow the multiple storylines. I also loved that Kristin Harmel narrated her own author’s note, which added an personal touch.
Julia’s storyline was especially moving, made even more poignant by the author explaining how her own experience with cancer influenced that part of the novel. It added an layer of emotion that stayed with me.
I’d recommend this to readers who enjoy heartfelt contemporary romance, ensemble casts, emotional yet uplifting stories, and books that would make fantastic film adaptations. Content warnings include serious illness, grief, and loss, all handled with sensitivity.
This is a warm, hopeful read that left me smiling long after I finished listening.
