I can’t believe there have been 24 Kim Stone mysteries and what is more each of them have been compelling reads holding my attention till the very end.
In this book a young woman dies in a car park and what at first appears to be a tragic accident soon turns into a murder investigation. As others die, Kim and her team rush to find the connection and the killer before anyone else is murdered.
There is also the mystery of some bones found in the garden of a house which is being renovated which Penn and Tiff are tasked with looking into. This leads to them trying to to get DNA from old neighbours without arrousing suspicion - something which Tiff seems to excel at!
The two plot strands come together nicely as the book progresses and there is even a section about Penn’s younger brother Jasper going on a date and Penn’s mortification at having to give him “the talk”!
This book was really about family relationships as all characters had problems going on in their personal lives and also the difficulties families face when dealing with mental illness, a subject the author handles sensitively and empathetically. The mystery itself contains several twists as the reader and Kim try to work out which of the witnesses is actually a killer - I certainly didn’t guess.
There is also another major theme in the book which is right up to date but I will not discuss it here as it might lead to spoilers!
As usual I managed to read this book in double quick time- it was that good, a real page turner. I definitely recommend “Last Whisper” and all the other Kim Stone mysteries as excellent and enjoyable crime novels.
