Set in the Caribbean which is what attracted me to this book, I wanted a pure escapist read and that is excacly what I got, Gritty drama page turning and wonderful

A great debut crime thriller that is a gritty yet rich read. A story that does not shy away from the difficult issues either.
The story line starts with Digger, the central character, being coerced into joining the police.
As different characters are introduced and the plot line develops, the story provides a fascinating, vivid , honest insight into life in the Caribbean, of its culture, religion, and their attitude towards women as well. We see the darker side also but the author manages to bring this very skilfully.
A book that had me flipping the pages as quick as I could. I was immersed in the Caribbean a world away from my life and thats what a great book does.
Thanks to Netgalley for the copy of the book

strangely because the head man, who has recruited a group of smart young local men and women to help him police 'his' town, is tough but essentially genial, I kept at this one =- through the dialect and explosive mores of the collection of home grown trained. Diggers, the intelligent fellow we are tracking meets his female comrade in brains and deductive skillls at the new police station, set up to work on difficult local crimes. she uses her language and he uses his more colloquial speech to get around the local places effectively. there are some refreshing cultural descriptions that add immeasurable depth to the characters in what is a find-the-murderer-story. It took me a while to warm to this one, but when I did. I found I cared very much about DIggers, Malan, the hot-head and male fashionista who is a fellow policeman who always runs before he does proper investigation - a thorn in Diggers and the new woman police's side as he gets thing wrong. Refreshing ...
