I am quite conflicted with this one - I was not expecting the short story format of this book, but I really enjoyed it as it was a series of engaging, colourful stories of Greece which ran from the romantic, to the fantastical to the quite macabre.

What held it back for me, however, was the overarching storyline of the series of postcards arriving at a woman’s flat, but addressed to someone else. The premise here is that a man has arrived at a Greek airport, waiting for his partner to arrive, only to find he has been stood up. He travels around Greece collecting these stories and writing them all down in a journal - he sends his ex postcards from each place he visits, and then sends her the journal.

To my mind, this was a bit stalker-y. It could have worked in some ways, but his tone is the journal sometimes came across as belligerent where his ex was concerned, and I felt it was wrong of him to send her the cards and journal in the first place - she’s left you mate, leave her alone…

I gave this four stars as I really did enjoy the stories, but this wraparound story just didn’t work for me.

I enjoyed this book but don't think it is Hislop's best. More a series of vignettes than a novel and feels a bit rushed.
