"I wasn't born to be a king. I am a priest, who became an accidental king."

Thus we are introduced to Tiberius Claudius Cogidubnus, pro-Roman client-king of Britain - and man with a foot in both the Roman and British camps. The story moves back and forth over time between 43AD - AD78 as Tiberius recounts the events of his life. And what events he was witness to! We have the revolt of the Iceni, the rebellion of Caractacus, and Cartimandua's support of Rome - this was a time when Celto-Romano society was standing up to the might of the Roman Empire.

A basic knowledge of Celtic-Romano Briton would be advisable so as to follow who the main characters are in this highly enjoyable story told in flashback.
