Mr. Hocknell's first book, "The Life Assistance Agency," is a clever and charming synthesis of the historical, paranormal, mystery, and journey of self-discovery genres. A nice combination that works well with the plot.

The novel revolves around Ben Ferguson-Cripps, a struggling writer and blogger, and his taking a job with the Life Assistance Agency. The mission of this company is to assist clients in whatever way possible to improve their lives. The first case involves a missing academic, Thomas Foxe, who was involved in the occult (communicating with angels, among other things) and a mystical society who is interested in the same thing. Both Foxe and the society are interested in the studies of John Dee, Elizabeth I's astrologer and magician.

Mr. Hocknell intersperses excerpts of the diaries of Dee's wife, Jane, and the present day story. And pay attention to the historical backstory. It is very important.

Though a little slow action wise in the beginning, the novel becomes a magical mystery tour of Europe with our protagonists' search for the missing academic. The ending is satisfying, which makes this an enjoyable read.

A really good debut novel and fun read.
