I Married a Soldier

I LOVED this book - it was a great read. The description does not do it justice - this is not a book about a soldier's death, but more about his life. It really brings Mark to life for the reader, and shows what a strong and committed soldier, husband, and father he was. The story starts out with Brenda meeting Mark at a club in Northern Ireland, at a time when it was seen as risky for her to frequent places where soldiers were, and to be associated with a soldier. I was born and raised in the US, so I was not as familiar with how the struggles in Northern Ireland looked from the inside, and this gave me a lot to think about. The book continues documenting their marriage, their family, and the time apart because of training and deployments. Then, Mark is killed in Afghanistan, and I read some of the most heartwrenching pages I had ever read, as tears streamed down my face (my husband is still not quite used to looking over and seeing tears streaming down my face as I read away in the corner). 

Brenda then takes her experiences with "the system" and uses them to help make changes so that other families do not have the same issues in the future. This is an inspiring story about a soldier, the family that loves him, and their sacrifices to make the world a better place to live in.

This is an incredible story of faith, determination and hope in the most heartbreaking of situations. I have a huge admiration for the stand that Mrs Hale has taken and all that she has achieved for bereaved military families since he tragic loss of her husband in Afghanistan. This is a fast-paced, gripping and inspiring read that I will have no hesitations in recommending!

Well , where on earth do I start ? I read this book over a few days , I found it hard to put down . How do you cope when your soldier husband is killed ? I really don't know where the author got her strength from . This book is a stunningly powerful story . I almost felt like cheering at the end , after I'd wiped my eyes .

It's what every military spouse fears: silence when there should have been emails, followed by uniformed strangers at the door. In "I Married a Soldier," Brenda Hale chronicles her happy marriage to career military man Mark Hale, and its heartbreaking end when he was killed in Afghanistan in 2009.

Brenda Hale's story certainly has plenty of interest--and romance. She met Mark when they were both still in their teens and he was deployed in Northern Ireland. Since dating an English soldier was dangerous in Belfast, they had to keep their relationship clandestine, both before and after their marriage. Hale describes how star-struck she was by this handsome Englishman, how happy she was once they married, and how devastated she was to lose him, and how that loss propelled her into politics.

Although this is ostensibly a book about the military life and the struggles that the families of soldiers killed in combat are often forced to go through by a thoughtless bureaucracy, much of the book reads more like a combination of romance novel and eulogy to Mark Hale. And it must be said that he sounds like a stand-up guy, and died a hero's death pulling wounded comrades to safety; however, gritty war prose this is not. The closest comparison I can come up with is something like "Twilight," only with the Christian subtext made explicit--Brenda and Mark both become devout evangelical Christians early on in their marriage, and much of Mark's company follows suit. It's up to the individual reader whether that sounds enticing or not. As a non-Christian from the American South, I can't work up a lot of enthusiasm for a Christianized military or for Brenda's later religiously-inspired involvement with the Democratic Unionist Party in Northern Ireland. Still, her faith certainly served as an important source of support during Mark's long deployments and after his death, and Christian readers will probably find her story inspiring.

And it was good she had a source of moral and spiritual support, and a close-knit community to help her after Mark's death, because some of the bureaucratic tangles she fell into were truly maddening. Just one particularly egregious example was the fact that the army had frozen Mark's pay and benefits the day he died; to add insult to injury, because he was killed in the morning, he hadn't technically "worked" that day and so didn't get paid for it. Brenda soon found herself with two children to support and no income, in danger of losing her house. Her fight to get the benefits owed to her and her daughters inspired her to enter into politics on a platform of support for military families, and she was duly elected and served two terms in Stormont.

The foreign policy buff in me would have liked to see a little more hard-hitting comparison of Afghanistan and Northern Ireland, a topic that simply cries out for analysis, but that's not what this book is about. Instead, it's the story of one woman's deeply personal journey into widowhood and activism, one that she has chosen to the share with the world.

Extraordinary! This is not only a personal story of great courage, but also many things more. Reading Brenda's story was very inspiring. We get the glimpse of how military families has to deal with their losses. She is truly a very brave and inspiring woman. 
I would definitely recommend this book. Sometimes it's good to read real life love stories for a change. Yes, it has some love elements too. Had a good time reading this.

This is a powerful story of a British woman who lost her soldier husband in the war in Afghanistan. It's quickly paced and well edited and I enjoyed it.

I am grateful that the author took the time to document her experience with her husband’s service and subsequent death as a soldier. Her family’s loss is more common than I’d like to believe, and her willingness to share her experience will be of value to fellow grieving families, but also to civilians who are so far removed from military activity that the reality of war is easily overlooked. It was tough to read, only because I knew how it would end, and i desperately wanted to be wrong.

Truly heart breaking. The description doesn't do justice to this book, it's filled with powerful emotions.Its not about a soldier's death, butore about his life, marriage, family.
