The Walking Bridge

An old automobile bridge in Chattanooga, TN., recently transformed into a bridge for pedestrian traffic, is the focal point of Sanders’ new novel, The Walking Bridge. In the sleepy little town of Chattanooga, local restaurant owner Brad disappears and Trevor, who bears a strong resemblance to Brad, shows up. A woman is kidnapped and another becomes stranded in the forest. Three tornadoes threaten to destroy the walking bridge and surrounding villages. An unusual homeless man with a unique eye for art, traverses the area, taking in the unusual occurrences. And an odd garden gnome drifts in and out of the characters’ lives. All this swirls together in a story of mystery, suspense and romance.

Once again, Sanders has blurred the line of fantasy and reality in this emotional, gripping thriller about people dealing with the trappings that they seemingly create in their own lives. When two doppelgangers end up in the same town, Chattanooga, one might think the conflict would be more in the open, more obvious. But Sanders hides the truth, reels us in, and then allows us to watch as the plot thickens, the characters are exposed for who and what they are, and strange new characters are introduced.

This book is literary fiction at its finest because the story soon becomes our story--the way we are affected by what happens around us, and how we internalize these things and evolve. There are three couples that the book is centered around, and they include the two doppelgangers (one of them is Trevor, the main character).

The book is full of metaphors, deep and lively. Indeed, the title of the book seems to represent the choices of paths we take in life, and whether or not we stay on a path at all.
