Description

Childhood sweethearts William and Mary have been married for sixty years. William is a celebrated surgeon, Mary a devoted wife. Both have a strong sense of right and wrong.

This is what their son, Joe O'Loughlin, has always believed. But when Joe is summoned to the hospital with news that his father has been brutally attacked, his world is turned upside down. Who is the strange woman crying at William's bedside, covered in his blood - a friend, a mistress, a fantasist or a killer?

Against the advice of the police, Joe launches his own investigation. As he learns more, he discovers sides to his father he never knew - and is forcibly reminded that the truth comes at a price.

A mesmerising psychological thriller from one of the greatest crime writers of today, Michael Robotham, the internationally bestselling author of THE SECRETS SHE KEEPS.

Praise for Michael Robotham's writing:

'Will have you turning the pages compulsively' The Times

'Robotham doesn't just make me scared for his characters, he makes my heart ache for them' Linwood Barclay

'Superbly exciting ... a terrific read' Guardian

'A nerve-shredding thriller with the heart and soul so often missing from lesser crime and suspense novels. I couldn't stop reading, yet I didn't want Audie's story to end. Robotham is an absolute master' Stephen King on Life or Death

As I have read all the earlier books by this author I was excited to see his latest up for review on NetGalley. As in the previous novels this one features clinical Psychologist, Joe O’Loughlin who as well as investigating horrible crimes is also battling a debilitating disease.
In this book, the eighth in the series, Joe is struggling with being a single father. His daughter Emma has been acting up at her new school and he finds it difficult to get through to her despite being a psychologist himself which is somewhat ironic. In the midst of these difficulties he receives a call to say his father has been seriously injured and his life hangs in the balance.
Rushing to the hospital expecting to find his Mother he finds another woman at his father’s bedside who claims to be his wife!
Joe begins to investigate how his father has ended up in this state and who this woman is. He begins to discover his father was not the man he thought he was and had a number of secrets which Joe needs to untangle.
As well as being a crime mystery this book also examines fathers’relationships with their children. Joe begins to question his own connections to his father as well as looking at how he is bringing up his daughters. How well do we really know our own parents?
There are a number of characters in the book who could be responsible for Joe’s father’s injuries and as Joe conducts his investigation with the help of Ruiz, his oldest friend, he begins to uncover all sorts of information which might or might not be relevant.
This is as much about Joe’s personal life as it is about a crime investigation. We even get a suggestion of a possible romantic interest which is left hanging at the end ready for he next book!
This is a great read and perfect for fans of Michael Robotham’s earlier books. I would suggest reading the previous books first as this would help with the context although it is possible to read this as a stand alone.
An enjoyable addition to this fabulous series and certainly a five star read for me.

Another winner from my favourite author! Grippy and twisty throughout and kept me guessing right up until the end. A well deserved 5 stars!!

I have been waiting for Joe’s story to continue since Close Your Eyes. Once I found out that Robotham was continuing Joe’s story, but ending it in the same book I almost refused to read The Other Wife out of anger. Joe has been my favorite male character since Gatsby. I tend to gravitate toward female leads so when I fell in love with Joe, I knew I was in trouble.
I was hooked on The Other Wife from the first chapter. I was so emotionally invested in every characters life. I am so thankful to Robotham for giving readers the opportunity to become more involved in Joe’s life; to understand his pain, his joy, and his desire. I am seriously his biggest fan and felt such sadness when I realized in the end that he wouldn’t be returning.
I just loved this book. Twists and turns that I wasnt expecting that led to a conclusion I didn’t predict. I was given a glimpse into the lives of Joe’s kids and developed a small crush on Ruiz.
I cannot thank Netgalley and Little Brown Book Group enough for allowing me the opportunity to read Robothams conclusion to Joe’s story.

This is the first time I have encountered Joe O'Loughlin. I will be reading the other books in the series if I can do so without bankrupting myself. I'm two-thirds of the way through the book and desperate to finish my work day so I can complete it. I don't think I can say anything to more clearly convey how intriguing, even tantalising this book is.

I will post this review on Amazon closer to release day

Firstly thanks to Little Brown Book Group UK and Netgalley for an advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review. This review will be posted on Goodreads and Amazon closer to publication date

I had not come across this author before so therefore knew nothing about Joe but it didn't detract from my enjoyment of this book at all but did encourage me to buy more from this series

A cleverly written book with lots of twists and turns that will leave the reader guessing up to the end. As well as being a thriller I enjoyed the human interest side of the story, Joe's interaction with his daughters, and the interesting character that is Emma

This book is well worth reading long into the night. Enjoy
