Description
The Day the Gun Went Off is a collection of short stories divided into two distinct categories.
One set centers around life in pre-Civil War Nigeria narrated by children ranging from 7 to 12 year-olds. Five stories narrated by five different girls describe the joys and travails of growing up among family and friends, while the two narratives by boys focus on the domineering father-figures in their lives and the inconvenience of village life.
The second set of stories feature three women recalling life in the United States as educated immigrants who joggle a full-time career with the challenges of parenting in a society that is alien to their own cultural upbringing.

This was a delightful trip back home with Bisi to the stories of her childhood and growing up, to the challenges faced and people met. I enjoyed the very most the imagery-filled description that allowed me into that place, that culture that she was describing. I'm hungry for rice pudding.
