Description
Room for Delusion is about dismantling the scaffolding of our past and holding it up to scrutiny. It unpacks those personal myths and memories that keep us trapped and draws the complicated relationship of mother and daughter with brutal candour, capturing its complex dance of love and hate. The writing is powered by a yearning prose that is self-aware, witty, sensual, lyrical and at times so evocative you can just hear, smell, taste and see it.
Bronwen is vulnerable. She consults psychotherapist Isabella Cavani. In consultations at the well-heeled therapist's home, Bronwen wonders: Is Bella the younger version of her mother who can listen as her own mother could not? Or is she the secret woman she desires?
Through her weekly sessions, Bronwen reveals how her life has been shaped: by her parents, teenage angst, her husband, children and her obligations to an ageing, disturbed mother.
Told through the lens of Bronwen's lusting for Bella, the novel offers insight into the yearnings of a woman undergoing psychotherapy trying to understand her past life in order to mend her present one.
