This is a fun book for new parents who grew up in hip hop culture. It would make a perfect baby shower gift.

Another "made for adult" books in the form of children's book, O IS FOR OLD SCHOOL is an alphabet book for parents "who used to be dope". It shows a 26 words and/or phrases that mean something totally different once you have kids (For example, C is for "crib"). Amusing as most of the books in this style are.

This is a hilariously funny ABC picture book that is targeted towards parents rather than small children.

This Hip-Hop ABC just goes to show how asinine, mammalian and plain stupidly childish current American slang is. It's quite a sociological message for a gimmicky gift book, in that it takes all the terms that dope muthas use when vibin' (or something) and shows how they grow new meanings when there's a toddler in the house – although lo and behold, those are the old meanings after all, and the fact is that it's the rap music that is annoyingly babyish. Who'dathunk?

Even though being a parent changes you for the better, it’s not uncommon to look back on one’s pre-kid days with nostalgia. As my kids are now well past the toddler stage, I find myself reflecting on days of long ago, back when I was a big hip-hop head and somewhat cool (at least in my head).

That’s why I found the board book O is for Old School by James Tyler so timely. Mr. Tyler takes common hip-hop phrases and applies them to parenthood in laugh out loud ways: C is for Crib - as in an actual place where babies sleep - and S is for Sucka…aka a pacifier. Ella Cohen’s bold illustrations fit perfectly and elicited smiles from ear to ear as I read each page with delight.

Great for ages 1-4.

It is a really cute little book.... it is brightly illustrated with really cute, fun pictures. I also liked the 'glossary' at the end, further explaining terms/meanings of the 'hip' words! It'd be fun to read to/share with littles!
I received an e-ARC from Quarto Publishing Group-Wide Eyed Editions & NetGalley, in return for offering my own fair & honest review.

A is for apple is old school. This new look at children's ABC's is da biz! I loved it. There's no reason you can't have fun educating your kids, so why not start with this new look, where A is for 'all good', D is for 'dawg', H is for 'hood' and so on?! The book is colorful, amusingly illustrated, and spot on with the alphabet! I commend it as an original, amusing, and a welcome and different take on your ABC's! Word, Bro!

This is a quirky and comical little abc book! More for the parents than the children, although it is a good way to introduce the abcs to kids, it is the parents who will be laughing throughout. The illustrations are cute and clean and simple, and this book would be popular in our ‘hood’ (see letter H!).

Thank you NetGalley for an early view of this book in exchange for my honest review.

What a fantastic new alphabet book! Parents will love it maybe even more than the kids and it will bring back all kinds of memories. I can't wait to share this with new families!

This delightful book will have both adults and kids smiling as it is shared together. The board book for toddlers is creative, nostalgic ( for adults ) and emphasizes how word meanings can change from one generation to the next. Hip-hop words of the parental generation re-emerge having a totally different and fresh take once their precious baby arrives.

This ABC book has playful language and also is educational. The words with double meanings, a before and now take, are witty and smart. For instance Bb is for ballin', (a baby crying), Cc is for crib, (a baby's bed), Dd is for dawg, (one's close friend), Hh is for hood, (something worn on your head), Ss is for sucka (a soother), Tt is for trippin' (to get excited about something, or to get upset over nothing), and Yy is for yo yo ( a greeting, hello) just to name a few. Thank goodness the author includes a glossary at the back to define the hip-hop words because a nerd like myself certainly needs some coaching. 😊

The illustrations are clear, uncluttered, vibrant and very colourful. "O is for Old School" would be a wonderful gift to give to new parents. I personally love the book as it is quirky and quite unique. Your little one will want you to read it to them again and again after they see how much you enjoy the book yourself and in so doing they will learn the alphabet like a G. Hop to it and get a copy so both you and your kid can be hip!

It's easy to be skeptical of this concept at first glance, but James Tyler executes it really well. The art is hip and super cute, the vocabulary is great, and there's an excellent glossary at the end. I only wish that this book had existed a few years ago when it would have been age-appropriate for a friend's son.

"O is for Old School” and O is also for Ode to Hip Hop
This is a salute to who we are, even when we bring our kids into the world, our love for Hip Hop will always be. James Tyler, what a blessing, has brought to us the perfect book to pass down to our young ones.

Start them young
A thoughtful gift for the OG’s having kids now. A sweet reminder of how things will now surely change with a child. But can I assure you, how fun it will be during “playing time”, “belly time”, and “bedtime” when you can pick up “O is for Old School” and bond with your young child while educating them in a fun way, all at once.

This is it! I have a new book that all new parents will be getting from me!!!!! This books takes old school AAV and gives it it’s literal meaning. And for the not cool enough, or not old enough for old school parents there is a glossary in the back that helps translate the before and the after kids meaning. I love this book, I love the illustrations. I LOVE IT!!!!!!

This is a fun ABC book, it is more for the adults reading it than the children, so it is a strange one in that respect but I thought it was entertaining! It wouldn’t be one I read more than once though and probably not one I’m going to be reading to my 18 month old daughter at bedtime!
