Description

Titus Fogg hates magic, and with good reason. Born into a murderous family of cruel and powerful casters in modern Massachusetts, magic has contributed to every bad thing that has happened to him since birth. After finally managing to banish the most likely evil (but definitely dirty-minded) entity called Shade from his body to the sidelines as his shadow, Titus has the chance to have a normal, magic free, high school life.

But, when Tess Roe, his classmate, neighbor and model of justice at their school realizes she can see the creatures Titus calls the Wyrd too, Titus must return to the world of the strange to help her. Soon Titus's dark past comes to light as he must prove that he isn't responsible for the death of one of Tess's friends, and the theft of a magical book that could lead to the destruction of Arkham.

Advance Praise

"I haven't been pulled into a book in well over a decade and this one grabbed me in the first chapter. When you start reading it plan on setting aside the time to finish it. Titus, Shade, and Tess will keep you on the edge of your seat waiting for the next misadventure to happen. It is a world of good and evil that allows many directions to move forward and I can't wait for book two and if any reader sees this world as vividly as I did I would expect a movie down the road also. Grab one for yourself and see what the hype is all about."

Fantastic!
I absolutely loved this - it was a great blend of magical storytelling, humour and teenage snark. The mixture of magic and adolescent hormones was highly entertaining, and I loved the bad influence of Shade.
The characters were flawed yet likeable, and they were fun to follow. I'm really looking forward to the next installment and hoping for a UK paperback release.

Titus Fogg is definitely an anti-hero. Piper creates a wonderfully intriguing world within our own world that will draw you in. His balance of well-paced storytelling and dark humor with make the pages turn effortlessly. While this is a novel primarily targeted at the Young Adult market, it is enjoyable for adults who like exploring this genre, as Piper has made it possible for older readers and/or adults to read the text at a different level than younger readers, exploring ideas of the id, ego, and superego. As the first novel in a series, you will be waiting impatiently for the next one, and leave you wondering where the journey might lead. It will not disappoint.

Is magic returning to the world? Will the Friendless Child awake? Is the Eldritch Age about to start? Actually none of these questions are answered in this book but hopefully will be in the sequel, whioch I eagerly look forward to. ThisLovecraftian book introduces us to Titus Fogg and his unwelcome companion Shade, his sentient (demonic?) shadow. Titus would like to be an ordinary teenager, but as the last scion of a magical family he is unable to escape being drawn into a contest to prevent the old gods returning. I loved it.

This one is a special one. I was in love after the first few pages. Titus Fogg is equally part magical and creepy. :)

After being trapped in dreamland for ten years, while demon used his body. Finally, he escaped and banished demon into his shadow. He is desperate to appear normal when starting high school, but common from an old magical family, living in a creepy house, full of magical items and hilarious shadow, it's kind of impossible. Tess is in the few classes with Titus. On a friendly neighborhood visit, she gets into something she shouldn't have and can now see stuff that's usually hidden from normal people's eyes. Thrown together, they have to solve a mystery.

The world described is ... amazing. It's very detailed, complex and very well developed. The story just jumps out of the pages. And the characters are fleshed out and complex. My favorite was the Shadow, he is hilarious and says the most inappropriate thing ate the best times. :) My only complaint is that it was overly detailed at times and made the storyline a bit hard to follow.

Highly recommend it to anyone who loves magic.

Titus Fogg by Aaron Piper. I liked Titus, Shade and Tess much more than I thought I would. Very different and interesting take on the world of magic. A fascinating world and will be looking for future adventures of Titus Fogg.

Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview the book.

What a marvelous debut novel! Titus Fogg was spellbindingly entertaining, wickedly fun, and a bone-chilling adventure that had me on the edge of my seat.

I love stories that can keep me on my toes and make me laugh. Titus Fogg by Aaron Piper definitely did that and caught me off guard with quite a few surprises. With plenty of action, humor, unexpected twists and turns, and spine-tingling suspense, the first book in the Wyrd series was a thoroughly enjoyable read that had me holding my breath a few times. It’s terrifying and absolutely enchanting at the same time. I was intoxicated with the magic, the danger, the unknown, and all the fantasy elements. I knew there would be some suspense based on the synopsis, but I honestly didn’t expect the story to be quite scary or gruesome. Some parts even gave me the chills… totally NOT a bad thing. I LOVE horror movies and being scared, so this absolutely made my reading experience more fun. The beginning did start a bit slow for me, but once it picked up, I was captivated and completely hooked!

I liked the world-building and all the magical aspects. I thought Piper created an amazingly dark, unique and intriguing world that had me engrossed. Even though some parts of the magic world felt a bit familiar, Piper weaved his own interpretations and ideas and that was interesting to read about. I enjoyed all the wonderful quirks, the weirdness, and even the ugly and frightening parts of this book. It was different in a good way and I had so much fun exploring this Wyrd world and going on this fantastical adventure with Titus, Tess and Shade.

Speaking of Titus, Tess and Shade, I thought they were such fascinating characters. Titus frustrated me quite a bit, but he’s such a likable anti-hero. Even if I didn’t always like or agree with his choices or how he went about to do things, he eventually warmed his way to my heart. Titus definitely had a softer and sweet side and I was able to see that in the way he always wanted to protect Tess and be there for her. I loved that Tess was no damsel-in-distress and she made sure Titus knew that. She was strong, feisty, brave, and determined and I really liked that about her. And then there’s Shade… sinister, snarky, and mysterious. Shade’s portrayed to be an evil creature, but I honestly really liked his character and found him very amusing. The supporting cast were quite interesting too and I can't wait to meet other strange creatures and characters in the next book.

Aaron Piper created a wildly imaginative and chilling adventure about magic, friendship, and the unknown that had me flipping through the pages. I enjoyed the wonderful suspense, mystery, humor, and surprises. I also really liked that Titus Fogg addressed important issues such as bullying and its consequences and having the courage to do what is right. Overall, I really liked this book and I think both young and adult readers would too.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This was something a little bit different and quite fun to read. Especially the creatures tricks that they would play on the main character. Would read more from this author.

An interesting take on magic in the real world. For Titus Fogg, the process of magic is tedious, but the results are spectacular, if sometimes accompanied by unanticipated consequences--just as it is with new technological advances. I look forward to seeing how this progresses as a series.
