Hand Lettering A to Z Workbook

I love books like this! I can spend hours trying to hand letter. It is art and it’s relaxing to work on. I only had the digital book to look at but will be buying this book. It would be a great resource.

This book is a great way to jump into becoming an expert at hand lettering. I like the examples, especially the flourishes at the end. I can't wait to buy this book. It will make a great gift for teens and adults.

I think this is a great companion to the Hand Lettering A to Z reference book. It allows you to practice the techniques you've learned while also giving you more insight into the types of letters and embellishments you may use.

This would be great for someone just starting out in the hand lettering world who is unsure whether they want to stick with the practice. There is no need for a million new notebooks, paper types, or pens. As long as you've got a pencil and some time you can start practicing. Giving the two books as a gift would also be ideal.

A must-read for Artistic people who love journaling, writing in planners, notebooks and creating different alphabets for Artworks just for fun! My favorite part of the book are the pretty handwritten quotes (So beautiful that they made me want to start a brand-new journal right now!!). Reading this book was a joy!! I am starting to practice drawing and coloring the alphabets right away!

This is a super nice book. I wasn't expecting a lot when I signed up to review it. Not only did this include a few basic alphabets and numbers, but it showcased a handful of really exceptional easy to follow alphabets! If you are a crafter and make lettered signs, this is a great book to have on hand. Loved the practice pages too!

This workbook is well done: it explains the materials you'll need before everything else, and the way the exercises are done is by starting off with the simplest style lettering and gradually introducing the harder styles. I think it's really good for people who are new to hand lettering.
But it is a companion to a book which I haven't read, and that fact took away from my experience.
If you got the book, and considering getting this workbook, it might be really helpful to you. And if you're a person who find working with workbooks very helpful to their learning process, this book will be of great use to you. Without the main book... well, it all depends on the person and their previous knowledge on the subject.

Useful and interesting workbook to doing hand lettering. I was longing to actually be able to use the practice sheets, but because this was a electronic ARC, I was unable to print the sheets out to try them. Guess I will have to buy the book for myself! Looking forward to diving in and using this.

I really liked this book about handlettering, as it gives you a lot of good tips on how to improve your handlettering or what you need to know as a complete beginner. I also liked that the author first explains some basic fonts and you can practise them and then goes on with words and whole quotes. Those were in different languages, which I liked very much. One of many handlettering workbooks, but definitely one I can recommend!

Pages full of information and practice sheets similar to those seen in elementary school allow the reader of this book to hand letter with or without serifs, bounce words and embellish with flair. There is a bit of history and terminology along with techniques and tools that provided at least a few new ideas for me to use when next I take up my pen to letter something interesting either in a letter or an art project.

Hand Lettering A to Z Workbook is an excellent guide to hand lettering and practice book with an informative introduction and basic instruction pages and worksheets. The flow gets more and more flourished and artistic, and culminates with some freeform examples. Good beginners guide and jumping off point for further exploration.

It is a nice workbook for hand lettering (to many empty practice pages, in my opinion, one is enough to make as many copies as you really need). This is a great book for an artist, personally I prefer Calligraphy, but I found some good ideas in this book too (flourishes, simple script and embellished script).

I really think this workbook can help those of us that can't draw become an expert or really good at hand lettering. The book gives you a lot of tips and what you will need to begin. As you get further into the book it helps you get more creative on what you can do with the letters and its great for beginners.

I’ve been reading a lot of Hand Lettering guides lately. Partially this is because I really do want to improve, but also partially because I’ve always been fascinated with typography. I love seeing how other artists interpret the same mediums, how they take them apart and explain it to us. I also find the art style of hand lettering to be very relaxing, so the guides can simply be fun for me as well.
This guide has to be one of the more thorough ones I’ve read. It covers all of the basics, of course, but it also covers things like terminology, flourishes, and even the ideal way to use the practice sheets included.
The practice sheets were really impressive as well. I know some people prefer that the books don’t provide it (instead preferring to provide their own) but I personally enjoy it. Mostly because it’s really helpful to have paper that’s all the same scale and has the same lines as the guides you’re using. People underestimate how important that is.
There are more guides and examples in the practice sheets than I expected. Eight full fonts/scripts are included (including lowercase/uppercase as well as the numbers and some basic punctuation). It’s incredibly in-depth.
The highlight though? That would have to be the practice sheets that come after all of that. Yes, there are that many practice guides included. There are guides on bounced words, flourishes, embellishments, and even some sample quotes to try and copy over. It’s pretty amazing, actually.
I’m looking forward to hearing what others have to say about it, but I’m personally more than happy with this Hand Lettering Guide.

I've never practiced lettering before, so this book was my introduction to the subject. Everything is so beautiful! For years, I saw great letterings on instagram/tumblr and I always wondered how it was possible to make such wonderful art with just a pen. Now, since I've started practicing the techniques from this book, I actually believe I might be able to be good at this someday. I still have a loooong way ahead of me, but at least now I know from where to start.

I used to like doing letterings on titles for projects and report papers during high school. Doing school works on the computer then was still not encouraged, therefore, students can still freely express their creativity even it is just for a title page. When I saw the author's previously published books in a local bookstore, I had the flashback of grade school and high school memories when I was still fond of letterings. But I never even bother to check them out because I thought that I've been there, done that.

When I was given the chance by the publisher for a reading copy of this latest book of Abbey Sy and after checking out the Introduction, I was eager to try again this old passion. I only knew of freehand and of using markers and fineliners before, but using the other techniques and different types of letters and layouts from this book has really made me excited.

The 85-page worksheet is also included from Sans Serif/Serif warmups, Simple Sans Seris, Embellished Sans Serif, Simple Serif, Swash Serif, Script warmups, Simple Script, Embellished Script, and worksheets for Bounced Words, Flourishes, Embellishments, and Inspirational Quotes. Those who are already fond of letterings or calligraphy and even those who want to try a new hobby, this new book of the author should be in the top of your list to check out.

I really loved this workbook. The author provides enough information so you understand concepts such as grouping. Abbey Sy walks you through different types of fonts and how to dress up each font. I really like how she included example and then gave you space to do each letter. I also loved teh grids included in teh last half. This allowed you to practice making words. I also love the included quotes and encouraged tracing to practice your drawing. The author loves teh art of hand letter and wants everyone to be as successful at it. I would absolutely buy this book!

This is a fantastic little book if you already know lettering or are looking into it. It has good instructions and includes worksheets to enable you to practice. What I love most is the breakdown of the parts of lettering and explaining the terminology of it. I studied in Graphic Design and remember how learning this made me appreciate lettering more.

A great workbook. I'm looking to work things like hand lettering into my classroom a bit more, and this will be a great resource. The explanation of terminology, the process, the practice... All things that will be good for my students, and really anyone who wants to play with hand lettering.

My personal bias is that with the ease of creating beautiful things digitally, we've let slide the craft of making things with our hands. Books like this one are a gift that celebrates the analog!

Note that this is a companion to Hand Lettering A to Z. I didn't realize it fully at the time I requested this for review, so this is a very short review for a very short book aimed at the print book market, because though it had some 195 pages, only about 23 of these are the book. The rest is largely-blank exercise sheets where you can practice the character sets the author lays out for you. I haven't read the original volume, so I cannot comment on that.

Those twenty-three pages lay out in brief the rules and arts required to create your own hand-lettered whatever-you-want-to create! The tips and hints start before you even write the letters, beginning with information on the kinds of paper and tools you might want to lay your hands on first, and then progressing into different styles of writing and different effects that can be achieved using those tools. I commend this as a worthy companion book, but as I said, I can't comment on the book it's a companion to!

This book was supposed to be for my kids, but it was fun for me too. We did it together!
Our lifestyle is so stressful, we are running somewhere, we writing down something very quickly, we dont have time to make some nice letters.
Do you know that improving your lettering its another way to relax? For me it was!
This books has also some practice worksheets.

This book is such a fantastic resource for any beginner interested in learning to handletter.
It's informative and easy to understand with wonderful exercises to practice with.

The author produced a book of easy-to-read instructions and wonderful illustrations for the art of lettering. More than just a refresher for me, this tutorial offered many unique styles and ways of visually producing letters of superb quality. It was clearly displayed how the art of calligraphy blows life into the English alphabet - the word.

Starting off on the right foot, suggestions were offered for creating the proper work space. Deciding on the types of paper and writing implements were broken down into their respective categories. The options for getting started were practically limitless. There's even room for the good ol' humble number 2 pencil.

Worksheets provided practice for each individual symbol. In turn, they would serve as an invaluable tool for the perfection of each individual letter. If it's calligraphy that you're after, this book comes well recommended.

A lot to work at hand lettering
Abbey Sy presents the "Hand lettering A to Z Workbook - Essential instruction and 80+ Worksheets for Modern and Classic Styles—Easy Tear-Out Practice Sheets for Alphabets, Quotes, and More" published by Quarto Publishing Group - Rockport Publishing. The basic instructions are concise and informative. The workbook underlines the importance of practice when one wants to engage in hand lettering. It gives examples of font styles, suggests different art materials (graphite and colored pencils, brush pens, fineline markers, ...), and offers more than 80 different worksheets which can be torn out. There are not only the "usual" worksheets, but also worksheets for bounced words in different languages, worksheets for flourishes and embellishments, and worksheets for inspirational quotes in color and gray-shades for exercise, also in various languages.
It is disappointing that the book comes as a paperback and not spiral-bound. This is difficult for the user who wants to work directly in the book because the book does no lie flat and it is difficult to scan or copy the worksheets when one does not want to tear them out. My recommendation is to cut the spine of and have the book spiral- or comb-bound for better use. Another solution would be if the worksheets would be offered as downloadable files in PDF-format, but sadly they are not.
I recommend the book for readers who have already knowledge about hand lettering or who own the author's previous book (Hand Lettering A to Z: A World of Creative Ideas for Drawing and Designing Alphabets) or a similar book. I recommend the book also for people who are interested in bullet journaling since they can use the hand lettering for creative application in their bullet journals. I do not recommend this book for beginners who yet lack the basic knowledge about hand lettering. For them I recommend a more detailed guide since this is only a workbook.

We've always been curious about creating fonts. We had no idea that the concept of doing so is one that many others have known about and were educated about it.

Educated? Did you have any idea that there is something called The Language of Lettering. We certainly did not. There are also tools to do your handiwork.

Creating your own letter is somewhat similar to brain mapping. The idea behind brain mapping is to be able to visualize what's in your head. If you lay out a series of letters and considering how they could look differently, it's a similar concept.

So, really, it's not difficult to do. It's fun even! This is for people who like to consider the differences between norms and what could be.

I love hand-lettering and I especially loved having this book! I used it to improve upon my hand-lettering, as I started getting into it a few years ago. Something that I loved specifically about this book is the illustration/demonstration text that you can use as a guide for your own work. It is very crisp and clean, the lines are well drawn and easy to follow. For me, it is difficult to let loose and add flourishes at the ends of letters and great creative. This workbook is nice because it teaches the basics but also gives you some room to create your own style.

As a hobby artist, I am always looking for instruction books to learn new techniques. My Hand Lettering A to Z Workbook did help me pick up new skills and I enjoyed doing it.~

This is a great resource for anyone wanting to learn how to write fancy things, or even just to improve their handwriting. I'm a fountain pen user, so I'm looking forward to trying this with one of my flex nibs. First I want to buy a paper copy so that I can actually use the worksheets (not so useful in ebook format, as you can imagine). Highly recommended!

This was a great book showing how to do lettering and add embellishments. I was confident that I could create some nice lettering and the hard copy book has tear put practice pages which is ideal for practicing.

After getting started with word doodles (see a previous review I did for The Art of Doodle Words) I quickly learned that I am really a beginner at hand lettering. I’m always jealous of the nice letter art I see online so a workbook like Hand Lettering A to Z Workbook by Abbey Sy sounded like something I could really use.

Sy starts the book by setting out the terminology used. Sy slowly explains all types of letters and fonts and then moves on to explaining the tools and techniques. After the long and detailed background information, the main part of the book contains several alphabets and a lot of room to practice all the letters and numbers. After the alphabets there are worksheets to practice several words, flourishes, embellishments and inspirational quotes.

This is a very complete book to get started with hand lettering. With so much information and room to practice it is a good introduction and I can say I have added some nice touches to my own journals.

“Hand Lettering A to Z Workbook” is a very accessible workbook aimed at beginners in hand-lettering who want to start with a good foundation and traditional letter form styles. The first few pages are spent on exploring the basics of typography, hand-lettering, and layout; there is not a lot of detail on any one topic here, but there’s no fat, either. The prose is very direct and to-the-point, and Abbey Sy includes recommendations for specific tools and methods.

Sy offers a good variety of styles for the beginner, from simple handwriting and serif letter forms to cursive scripts and bounce-lettering. She walks through the basics of layout, especially for a single quote or short phrase, as well as process — from a rough penciled template to a fully inked and colored end-product. Along the way, she includes many examples of different sketches, scripts, and fully-rendered quotes, to fuel the artist’s imagination. She also offers different character types and variants, special characters, and embellishments.

While this book may not be of much interest to an experienced hand-lettering artist, it’s a great place to start, especially for anyone who may want to hand-letter their own cards and gifts, or add a bit of pizzazz to their journaling and scrap-booking. Accessible and thorough, “Hand Lettering A to Z Workbook” is a great place to start your hand-lettering journey and build a solid foundation for an ongoing practice. By the time you’ve worked your way through, you should have a thorough understanding of the hand-lettering process, and the ability to create polished, professional-looking typography art and gifts.

This is an excellent resource for anyone looking to grow their lettering skills. You do need to have a general basis of knowledge on how to use your pens/ markers properly. This book gave me excellent ideas for new fonts to try and inspiration to keep working on learning my lettering. I would have liked a bit more guidance on the actual formation of some of the letters- I'd consider this more of an intermediate book than a beginner book.

This would be a useful book for anyone trying to improve their lettering styles. As a lover of journalling this book was great with lots of space to practise (or would have been in a physical copy). There were explanations of the different styles before pages to copy and rehearse the styles. After practise of each letter in each style, they were pulled together to create different quotes in a variety of languages.

The book is good for beginners. It starts with explaining basic terminology and explains which tools and materials you need for hand lettering. There are lots of cute little drawings and different ideas for painting beautifuls letters. The biggest part of the book consists of worksheets. Unfortunately, they weren't really helpful in an e-book. All in all, the book can be really helpful, but I expected a little more.
