Description

Vicki Leydig thought she was going to have a few drinks with her friend Mary. She didn’t expect Doug Stirnweiss to offer her a ride home, and she sure didn’t expect to watch a stranger blow Doug’s head off in the parking lot. Penns River police don’t have much to go on until Detective Ben “Doc” Dougherty interviews casino employees and learns of drug deals going down in and around the property. Leads show promise and fall apart with depressing frequency until the local prosecutor turns a minor charge into a statement that leads Doc and the rest of the police force to a surprising conclusion, though not before tragedy strikes one of their own.

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh mob boss Mike Mannarino faces increasing pressure from his bosses in New York, so much so he’s thinking of reaching out to Chicago for protection. What the rest of his crew has to decide is whether Chicago is the only other organization Mike might make an arrangement with.

It’s another week in Penns River, with distractions that range from petty vandalism to a bridge jumper keeping the cops’ full attention away from the critical task at hand.

A good solid mystery with interesting characters. I found the caught up in the story, reading late into the night. I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys mystery/thrillers. I received an e-book from NetGalley in return for an unbiased review.

Ten-Seven is the fourth novel in the Penns River series featuring Detective Ben "Doc" Dougherty, however, it works very well as a standalone too. This is a wickedly plotted story that you can tell Mr King has thought long and hard about; it also moves at a brisk pace, and I admit, I raced through it in a matter of fun-filled hours. The characters are flawed, real and superbly developed. I found the whole reading experience absorbing and entertaining, as there was action galore. There are drug dealers, mob bosses and dysfunctional killers; it's just another day in Penns River. I look forward to reading more from this series in the future.

Many thanks to Down & Out Books for an ARC.

Vicki and Mary have been to the casino and drinking and having fun. They ran into a friend of theirs, Doug, and persuaded him to take them home, as it was well known that Doug would have one one beer the entire evening, thus was safe to drive.

In the parking lot, a man approaches the car they've all just got it. He walks up to the car, asks a question of Doug, then calmly pulls a gun and shoots him in the face.

The assault becomes a murder investigation when Doug dies later in the hospital. The witnesses are of little help.. they never saw the shooter's face. Detective Doc Dougherty starts interviewing casino employees who knew the victim

Book 4 of the Penns River Crime Series is as action packed as the previous books in this particular series. It reads okay as a stand-alone, but would be more potent having read the entire series. This is a well - written police procedural with credible characters filled with suspense, danger, even some wry humor here and there.

Many thanks to the author / Down and Out Books / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
