Description

Just when you think you know the outcome, you will be surprised. This third book in the author's probation officer series provides many twists and turns, and is hard to put down.

Set in southern California, the novel follows the continuing adventures of Linda Davenport as she navigates the world of criminals in her role as deputy probation officer. When a convicted felon, whose sentencing report Linda prepared, escapes while being transported to prison, he is bent on revenge.

When Linda learns he has set his sights on her, she is forced to go into hiding. Meanwhile a nemesis from her past comes back into her life, forcing Linda to keep a deadly secret. Linda and her fiancé, David Wyndham, are planning their wedding, but his fear for her safety results in an ultimatum that she leave probation.

It is not an option for Linda, but will it be a deal-breaker for her future with David? Wedding plans are put on hold. She reconnects with her family in Michigan, who also put pressure on her to give up her job.

Frustrated and helpless, Linda must wait out the threat until it is safe to return to California. But is the threat really over? She and David reach a truce, until a new challenge puts her in jeopardy again. This time Linda tells no one and takes matters into her own hands, risking not only her future, but her life. You will find the story wraps up logically, with no loose ends.

The author's twenty-six-year career in the probation system ensures that the reader will get an accurate glimpse into this aspect of law enforcement, rarely written about by mystery authors, while enjoying a fascinating story line.

Probation and parole are an essential portion of our justice system that we rarely encounter or think about. Jeanette A. Fratto obviously knows it well. Thank you for sharing this aspect of the penal system, presenting it as the necessary step between the courts or prison and the complete freedom of the guilty, a step in the system that we count on to protect us. I found this a very interesting and informative story tied tightly to a compelling entertainment. No Deadlier Destiny is the third in a series but is completely stand alone. I will be hunting up the first two stories, however, as Linda seems a friend at this point. I hope there will be more to come.

This story is told from the viewpoint of the offices of Probation and Parole in our justice system, in the first person of Linda Davenport. Linda is a soon-to-be-married 31-year-old deputy probation officer in Orange County, California. When her co-employees at probation are approached by their boss Ed about a possible loan of personnel to the ankle unit, overwhelmed with cases monitored on house arrest supervised by the Post Release Community Supervision Program. Linda considers it seriously, as the need for frequent reports to and from the courthouse are not as often required as is her current position, and she wants less stress and more time to prepare for her wedding. Moving to a temporary post with PPCSP seems to be working in her favor. Until one of the cases from her Parole past breaks out and jail, and she is on his list for revenge. Right behind the dead judge... She is going to have to stay out of pocket. And her fiancee, not a member of law enforcement, is not handling the situation at all well. The last thing Linda needs is an ultimatum about her choice of employment on top of the fear already buzzing around her head.

I received a free electronic copy of this novel from Netgalley, Jeanette A. Fratto, and Books go Social - Outskirts Press. Thank you all for your generosity. I have read this novel of my own volition, and this review reflects my personal opinion of this work.
