Description

Three Bonds Unbroken follows three siblings as they face the challenges of life as first generation Latvian immigrants. Set in the mid 1980’s of a simpler era, the novel takes place in Cleveland and Toronto. The oldest of the three, John, is facing the end of his marriage and its effects on his three daughters. He struggles to keep the family together. Daina is getting married for the first time at the age of 40. Karl is coming to terms with the mistakes of his past to face the future with renewed faith. Revisiting the beloved characters of The Shadow of Silver Birch, this novel shows how the family has evolved and flourished.

This is about the lives of three first generation Latvian immigrants to Canada, and about their relationships, marriages , successes and failures. I really enjoyed this book and thought the characters were well portrayed. I was rooting for them all the way through their rather troubled lives!

The reader will connect with the genuine dialogue of the characters as they try to get to the heart and soul of realistic family conflicts. And they will empathize with the story that Peipins painstakingly weaves with threads of tenderness, regret, frustrations and love.

Three siblings mature and manage life as adults in "Three Bonds Unbroken." I enjoyed following the unique lives of John, Daina and Karl as they face relationship challenges and discover more about themselves. Their family dynamics are fairly universal for all families, not just those of Latvian descent.
I didn't really connect with the characters, though. That could be in part because this is book two of the series and doesn't include enough background information. Readers might find this book more engaging if they've read the first book in this series. Also, there is quite a bit of sexual content and some adult language I don't appreciate.

I award this book 3.5 stars rounded up to four.
Not particularly memorable in its story arc but remarkable in the kindness the characters extend to one another, Three Bonds Unbroken is a quiet and yet surprisingly moving read. Engaging with the text, felt a little like joining the family for their Thanksgiving meal; the food was enjoyable and the company winsome. Perhaps not everyone wants to be there but they're all on their best behaviour and so a sense of familial calm descends.
I was very touched by the considerate and patient approach on display between siblings, parents and children, as well as (current and former) spouses. There's a lesson in there somewhere.

I am grateful to Netgalley and the publisher for sharing an advanced copy with me in return for an honest review.
