Description

“It was a GREAT read! The plot is modernly believable, the main characters are very HOT, and the writing is razor wire tight.” ~ Kenneth R. Lewis, former police chief and author of Little Blue Whales, Flight of the Bowyer and The Sparrow’s Blade

Grace Ashton Coolidge will never forget the horror of seeing her husband, President Matthew Coolidge, gunned down by two rogue Secret Service agents on that convention stage, and she will never forget the agent who carried her to safety. Now, Grace must attend two functions as a former first lady, and she is being forced to accept protection. Unable to trust the Secret Service, she seeks out former agent John Marin to take the job.

She said it was for only two weeks, but John Marin wants no part of protecting the former first lady. He has moved on to a tropical island, where good rum and willing women help him forget that a United States President was killed on his watch. But John finds it hard to resist the beautiful, elegant woman who chases him down and begs him to protect her. Something else is haunting Grace Coolidge, and it will take more than leading her around with his hand at her back to get to the truth. Whatever her past, he will protect her with his life, no matter the cost. And that cost might include his heart, a heart broken one humid night on a convention stage.

It was only two weeks, she said. But John Marin knows better.

Two weeks will never be enough with this woman.

Advance Praise

"The mystery build up is full of twists and turns and some of those twists echo current political news. The political intrigue, scary and realistic as it is, is just part of the story. For at the heart are two people who find themselves in a position they never imagined. They both have sound reasons for not wanting to get involved, but the heart makes its own demands. The tension between the two is palpable, the electric current arching. Marin is as dominant as they come and Grace is no wilting flower. Their exchanges escalate along with the mystery and I was thrilled to be along for the ride!" ~ RJR

The President of the United States is assassinated, on stage, as he is preparing to announce his plan to run for four more years. His wife had just left the podium when he is taken out by two secret service agents. Why would the secret service kill the president? First Lady Grace Ashton Coolidge will never forget the sight as she is removed from the stage by John Marin, a secret service agent assigned to the President’s detail. John resigns after the event and moves to St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands, knowing that he has failed in his assignment. Nine months later, Grace has commitments that she must attend and she is forced to accept protection. The only one she trusts to keep her safe is John Marin, but first she will have to find him. Will John agree to protect her? John feels that Grace has not told him the full story, but he agrees to protect her as long as she follows his rules. The attraction between John and Grace is electric, but will they give in to their feelings? An intriguing story line between a strong, capable woman who knows what she wants and the man who will fight her and himself to keep her safe. This was a new to me author and i have to say she caught me good. The first chapter holding my interest enough that i read through into the night with this novel. Grace's character intrigued me from the start, a woman who was the First Lady until her husband was killed. Now nearly a year later she has threats all around her and secrets that may get her killed. John Marin was a cool character, sometimes a bit uncompromising and hard, he hides out in the Caribbean after watching grace's husband get killed on his watch. Now the woman is at his boat to convince him to once again be her protector. With his feeling for her growing by the day can he work with what she makes him feel and still be strong enough t get the job done right or will Grace just be another casualty on his watch?

I found this to be quite a calm book, even though there was a lot going on around the characters the author did not bog us down with much political policies, just weaving them seamlessly into the story so we are not overwhelmed. A good read and I would highly recommend this book.

I mostly liked this book. The premise caught my eye and I liked where the story was going. Now, it dragged towards the end and the characters were a bit irrational, but it was still an enjoyable book.
The flirting and sexy scenes were great

PD: There were some spelling mistakes (at least in my copy)

This was a great read. First Lady Grace Ashton Coolidge has just introduced her husband in New Orleans when he is shot by two of his secret service detail. John Marin is standing behind the president but by the time he realizes what happened it is all over. He picks Grace up and take her out of there as fast as he can. He does not see her again until she is standing in front of him asking for his help. He is enjoying the easy life on his boat in the Caribbean and does not want to be back in the political drama but Grace needs someone she trusts to be her security and John is the guy. He with some of his friends take the job. It is a hard struggle of wills and some sexual tension they both try to ignore. Can he keep her safe for what she has to do?

Very enjoyable read. The former First Lady is scheduled to honor her assassinated husband and the political powers would like her to be protected by the same Secret Service responsible for her husband's death, She counters their proposal demanding her own private security. The sparks fly when she hires the man she feels saved her from dying the day her husband was slain. Good characters and nice transition form England to the States.

The summary is what caught my eye to read this book. So glad I did! The writing is fantastic mixing mystery and romance. The characters were a little far fetched, but to me that's with any good romance book. While some parts lagged, the flirting and intriguing plot kept me reading in one sitting. Nice work!

I received an ARC from Netgalley.

This is a well-written book, with a flowing story line and compelling characters. The book got a bit draggy towards the end, but overall, it was an enjoyable read, particularly for anyone looking for a romance book with the 2 leads having great chemistry with each other.

First A Lady is well written, with lots of romance and suspense as you would imagine. The cover and the summary are excellent. I did struggle a little getting into it, but overall a good read.

I was drawn to this book because bodyguards are my catnip. This one had a clever plot line. Grace and John were an interesting couple. It took me a bit to really embrace them as a couple. But by the end of the book, I was all in on their relationship and hoping they could pull it all together. Between John's extreme alpha tendencies and Grace's secrecy, their relationship is quite bumpy.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. The characters felt well-developed and the storyline was creative.

Thank you to NetGalley for this reader's copy.
